These guys are very very smart - the code for the algorithm must be a work of art. I particularly like the comment about the added element of "self learning" to enable it to adapt to the best result - phew!

It's pretty clever stuff, and though I don't want to seem all sour-faced about it, the 3D motion capture system they've got in there make things one hell of a lot easier.  I'm always far more impressed when the quads have their own vision-system as well... although it would be really *really* hard to implement in this case, but could involve an "observer" quad looking at the pendulum and giving advice to the catcher/balancer.

Where do I get a grant, so I can give up the day job and go and make quads play catch all day instead ?

Amazing.  Is it the same people who are programming multiple quads to fly formation in confined spaces.... going through windows in sequence to reform in formation once through the space?  I posted their vids on another forum sometime ago, can't find it now...wind up! Techno.

It's impressive but call me when they can make a cuppa and take the dog for a walk. Then I'm intersted.

Titles to research..on Youtube... I cannot find the original posts... something like 'Nano quadrotor swarm performing manoevers', & 'Quadrotors perform aggressive manoevers'...... if you find the one there are then several videos displaying pre-programmed quadrotors with gps & proximity awareness sensors....all pretty cool I thought......
