I would do a write up the the magazine on how you fly with your disabilities and show that flying is available to anyone who are unfortunate enough to have extra challenges to overcome.

Would be a very interesting read on how FPV is actually helping, and not hindering your flying!  :)

Fair play for putting the effort in Kev!  I have to admit, I have always been a little sceptical o f the BMFA mag.  I've been a member for nearly 20 years now, and the amount of coverage given to "traditional" modelling I have always felt borders on excessive.  I came to the conclusion that that must be the target audience for the BMFA though.  With that in mind, I find it extremely refreshing that people take the time to write articles on new fangled stuff, like FPV and the equipment used.

I too would be really keen to see some more on your customised TX and other equipment!

Cheers
Andy

Can I just ask - did you ever have an account on here before?

I vaguely remember someone "back in the day" who had a similar condition to yours who was also an avid FPVer.
Steve, not 100% sure, but if I had, it would have been this username I've been using Davross as a nickname since the Internet was invented. Certainly don't remember posting on here, but with the amount of beer I drink, don't remember doing quite a lot of things.

As to my modified transmitter, I will try and get some pictures and post in a new thread.

Steve, not sure if you mean here or as another article? I will put something here just as a quick background..l I have a muscular disorder called spinal muscular atrophy that means I use an electric wheelchair. It's a progressive disease that means I can barely lift my arms any more in my uni days I could down a pint in record time, now I rely on carers to tip it down me just as fast :-) I'm typing this using voice recognition, so please excuse odd punctuation and case.

Over the years, I have adapted all of my equipment to meet my needs, helped by a fantastic group of friends with a huge range of skills. My main carer is a very close mate who I met modelling; he is an incredible solderer, mechanic and airbrush artist, who is also an awesome pilot having won national championships indoor flying. I also have a friend very skilled with CNC milling and design, and another who can take an airframe corpse, fit for the bin and revive it to pristine condition.

My current transmitter is an FR Sky tray radio (X9e) modified to have an increased right-side palm rest (3-D printed) and with the left side joystick ripped out and moved to an extended box (again 3-D printed) nearer my weaker hand. The box docks to the main transmitter via a Multiplex connector making it removable for storage.

It slots onto my wheelchair on a custom-built bracket, supporting the weight without the need for a neck strap. I do all my CAD myself and own three different 3-D printers (two of which are usually broken at any one time). Oh, the joystick finials are also custom, resembling the eye of Sauron to give my thumbs a little more grip while flying.

FPV wise, I hate goggles, but get on well with box viewer style units I have skyzone HeadPlay clones. Someone just straps me in and I fly. Amusingly battery life is not an issue my wheelchair has a connector for the goggles, allowing me to run them off the main battery... about 15 days continuous use on one charge :-)

I guess that's about it my friends do all the fetch and carry, and arming airframes. I fly fixed wing and quads and run an indoor micro quad racing group that CurryKitten sometimes attends I guess he would say I can fly okay.

If you have any more questions, feel free to ask. If you think this would make a good article for publication, then let me know. This is true of anything on here more than happy to be guided on what is of interest.

Time to bed tonight.
Kev

I think an article would be a brilliant idea, it's not only inspiring and shows your passion for the hobby, it helps anybody facing possible difficulty's what is possibly and it also shows the general mentality of other fliers in the hobby and that there usually ready to help.
15 days continuous use on one charge, now I like that.  ;D G
