Omnibus F4 Autopilot....Running with iNAV

How big is your Autopilot..?

Need a small, light Autopilot..that doesn't cost the earth?...This one seems to offer what's needed, although like most things it does have some limitations. The limitations are purely because of its roots in Multirotors, but here is where some of its strengths come from. Keep in mind that this setup costs around £35 depending where you get it from, and this includes an M8N Sat Puck with onboard Compass should you need to use it. iNAV suggests NOT using the Compass for Fixed Wing use, so Im not using it.
  You can get it cheaper if you go for a lower spec GPS...this one is small and gets 14 Sats indoors, very easily.
 









 This is version #1 and does not have an onboard current counter, but there is a Pro Version available for similar outlay, I didn't want that feature. Having used iNAV to setup this FC, its very easy to do when compared to APM for example, no comparison in fact.
 iNAV for Fixed Wing is in its infancy right now, but it has already proven itself and will no doubt improve very quickly.
  The APP is very easy to use and you can set everything up with it including the onboard OSD. Having used it I was impressed, it looks and feels very well done and thought out without being overly complex, like Mission Planner is.
 If I can use it, anyone can..As you can see in the pics, the wiring is very minimal indeed and you can make a very neat setup with a bit of planning.

 Power:
             My board is using Main Lipo Pack feed (up to 4S), this is going in via the JST. The board has a small onboard 5v regulator which in turn powers the GPS, FC and your receiver via the SBUS lead. It does not power your servos, which is a good thing, your ESC BEC will do this.
  The orange jumper wire feeds Main Pack Lipo voltage over to the Camera and VTX Pins, handy, and neat standard wiring.
If I had to pick fault, it would be the lack of servo output pins for a fixed wing, at present there are (2) outputs for motor control and (4) others for Ail. Elev. Rudder, output for 2 of these PWM5 and PWM6 only have Ground and signal pins though, but you can work around that one. If you are using it for a flying wing, this is not a problem.
  Presets for standard types of aircraft are available, just two at the moment, one for a flying wing, and one for a standard Aileron, Elevator, Rudder, Motors(s)....More will follow, like the Talon setup.
  So far, I think it's brilliant considering how cheap it is. The OSD Configurator inside the APP is particularly easy to use.

None of the white Micro plugs / Sockets are in use, it's all DuPont Servo Pins. If you want extra output pins for Camera / Pan / Tilt etc, Im assuming you can plug those directly into your receiver.

 Finally managed to get the FC armed using a Switch / Motor KILL....

 Impressed so far, this morning saw 18 Sats indoors at lightning speed...Now I have figured out how to ARM the board and make the Flight Time clock run, it all looks good.

 It's going in my Skywalker Falcon with a Swift Mini and and L9R receiver. I still can't figure out how to make the RSSI work though.

 I think the L9R will outrange my 5.8G VTX tho...:)

As far as i know the L9R has just analog RSSI out.
So you need to connect this to the RSSI pad of the F4 board.
Then enable ADC RSSI in Config Tab of iNav

The flight clock should automatically activate once you ARM the board (or atleast that's what my board does).

For me with the X8R, I just plugged in the RSSI and GND cable onto the RSSI and GND pad (I have a different board). Don't forget to 'activate' the Analogue RSSI feature in the iNav GUI (It should be on the page where you activate the Voltmeter/current-meter/GPS on the bottom right) :)

Thanks, I did try this I think and did set the Analogue RSSI to ON....I know the L9R has a "standard" RSSI output....I will look for the ADC  RSSI in the Config Tab...

 Update:

 L9R RSSI working....I just put the signal line on the F4 board on and it worked OK.

 Putting the Taranis into range Mode saw the RSSI drop to approx 50%.

 Sorted out the Direction to Home pointer as well, as the OSD inside iNAV is misleading, they need to correct this as the Home Pointer shows up as a numeric value rather than an Arrow Pointer.

  I still need to sort out some max bank angles etc using the CLI and it's going to be all good.





 Conclusions:
                      I just need to package the F4 Board onto a heat sink mount to drag some heat out of it due to its linear 5v regulator. Other than this, with iNAV it represents outstanding value in a very small, lightweight package.
  Perfect for a small flying wing in fact.

  So impressed with this Omnibus F4 FC I splashed out another £16 and bought another one.  iNAV is really getting easy to handle now, even for my worn out little brain.
 
  Keen to try it on a full blown 3 axis giro setup, I decided to fit two servo output sockets on the heat sink / mounting plate to make it more practical to use.

 This gives this little FC a total of Six Servo outputs.  Oh, and I can recommend the Loctite Flux Pen in the picture, makes soldering PCBs so much easier...and I used real solder with real Lead in it....:)

 1..Motor #1
 2..Motor #2
 3. Aileron #1
 4. Aileron #2
 5. Elevator.
 6. Rudder.

 


This is the underside of the board showing how I wired in the two servo sockets, and also the filtered DC input wires.

Hi Ian,....Yes, its very low cost for sure...Its main downside for Fixed wing use is it lack of servo output pins....For some very odd reason, they decided they needed two motor outputs and also with a conventional Plane setup, a servo for each Aileron...which seems wasteful for a FC with so few pinouts..?
  Of course, you can plug into your RX, but since we all love sppm RX input and typically a wing mounted RX, thats not such a good idea...Ok if the RX is mounted near the FC though or in the Fuz and you have an RX with 8 sets of pinouts....:)
   Cant complain tho...its ideal if you are into smaller models or wings...and its very cheap...I wish I could load iNAV into my Mini APM.....lol.

   Oh wait...is that even possible...?............... :vulture:

There are so many options for fixed wing though, it's easy to miss stuff in the iNav setup. Have you flown it much yet? How did you find the PIFF tuning?

 Yes, agreed, I like the Omnibus F4 V1 myself...It seems to work and is very lightweight..I really like iNAV, its way easier than Mission Planner...I would try and use the pre-sets on offer inside iNAV if I were you...Im not at all familiar with PIDs myself, not yet gained experience playing with them TBH.
  iNAV is in its infancy regarding Fixed wing....expect it will get better though rather quickly....lol...
