2.4 Signal Loss (swamped by something)
« on: June 18, 2017, 10:25:34 PM »

We had a cracking day of FPV at the field today with most of the regulars away at Weston Park. Towards the end of the day I sent the Skywalker out on a flight plan towards the lighthouse, like I've done many times before. Slightly distracted by someone who came over to look at the groundstation etc it was as I was about to show him how I could switch cameras that  I first realised I had lost video, I managed to get 'something' back by realigning the patch a bit tighter on the plane but it was really poor. Then noticed I  no longer had an RC link to the model. Having flown out to 5.2 km earlier in the day with a good 80% RSSI signal, this was very odd at around only 3km out.

I wasn't sure what to do, this was a new experience to me. I turned the tx off and on, I kind of got a connection back for a brief moment a couple of times, but really there was nothing. Video was still crap.

The APM went into RTL, which was fine, but I wasn't sure what it was going to do when it got back home, would it land, if so which direction would it land, into wind or what? Fortunately my telemetry link was still working, thanks to my new dipoles, so I set up a new flight plan which was basically a final approach and landing, uploaded it whilst in the air and put the model into 'AUTO' mode from Mission Planner and waited for it to return and land. I'm not sure at what point I got 2.4 back, I will have to check the logs.

Unbeknown to me, Phil (Cactus) standing about 50 meters away from me was also experiencing problems at the same time in the same area, unfortunately for him, his wing doesn't have a flight controller, well it does if you count him, so I think he may have needed a change of underwear. Fortunately he managed to wrangle his model back in one piece.

This is what a plot of my 2.4 rc rssi looks like...

I looked at the telemetry signal running on 433, and I think that is ok, there is a bit of an extra drop-off but I'm not sure if that's distance related or not, I would need to take a closer look and compare with other flights.

In a way, I'm glad it happened to Phil as well as that way I know it was nothing to do with my kit, and vice versa for him, but WTF would cause that?

I'm not glad!!!
Watched the vid back last night, had at least 3 lockouts for 1-2 seconds.
The dive wasn't fun because as I learnt in the morning that results in a dive overspeed I can't pull out of.
Flying back at full speed also had it trying to twist out of the sky.
I was already at the limit of my range but this wasn't that.

When I first started out in FPV with fairly unsophisticated kit, I had a very similar and scary situation. With my trusty Futaba kit it was no issue to get out to 3k if the model was high enough for the tx signal to clearly see the rx. On this particular day at around 1k the radio just went off. The Ap kicked into RTH then the video went off. At the same time we heard heavy rotor blades and 2 Apache Longbows flew up the valley very close and under 700 feet. I suspect they had full radar mode or something on and probably picked the model up as a threat. When the model was within visual range both came back and it never happened again.
So is it possible that you had something like that going on near you?
