First Mavic Flight
« on: August 11, 2017, 04:34:40 PM »

Finally got some time to go out with the Mavic, went to my favourite spot but there was a guy there 'fossiling' who spoke to me the whole time (which is fine, he was just interested and amazed by it's capability) but meant I couldn't properly focus on what I was doing.

It will take a bit of getting used to flying as it's very different given the level of assistance you have, but in terms of a photography tool it's amazing! Looking forward to seeing what I can get out of it.

So nothing exciting to begin with, and I need to get video software that will do higher than 1080P, but here are a few first clips -

"I hope this flies well, I've just spent £1000 on it ... I must find a body of water to fly over to properly test it out!"

Nice video though! Rock solid!

Of course, got to keep the edge! It does inspire a lot of confidence given how stable it is, I was talking to the guy with it in a hover and it just sits there like it's on a pole or something!

Looking forward to seeing some great videos bud, there a great bit of kit.
I film in 4k and then edit it to 1080, using GoPro Studeo, works good for me.

Looks great Eqan, I'm glad it's working nicely for you and giving you the confidence to fly over water.

Just as an aside, (and perhaps a question to G) is there a benefit in filming in 4k and editing in 1080 ?  Why not just film in 1080 anyway ?

For some reason, when filming in 1080 to me doesn't look as good as 1080 should, it looks great live, just not so great on playback, sometimes get weird patterns in details such as roof tiles. I have seen some comments about it on YouTube, apparently its best to use 1080 at 60f with the Dji Goggles, and that's what it was designed for, I think it is a muck up by Dji, hopefully I will have the Goggles in the next few days and I will see.
I will do some filming in 1080 60f next time out and put it up.
If you do go for a Mavic in the future Wayne and you wont to try before you buy, you are welcome to have my one to test fly, its a great bit of kit, for what its designed for, I don't think you would be disappointed.

Also if you film in 4K you can crop and zoom the footage if you render in 1080

Don't film in 1080p60/50.  It's poor quality - it has a lower bit rate designed for FPV use with the goggles.  2K or 4K are the best resolution options.

Cheers guys, yeah I've read to avoid 1080/60, this was filmed in 2.7k and rendered in 1080P/30. It seems to have destroyed the bitrate though! Lots to learn to get the best camera and render settings!
