Tx Mounting
« on: October 11, 2017, 08:49:15 PM »

Quite a lot of Video Tx's use a standard RF chip with integral heat sink ~20x18mm mounted direct to the pcb with a plastic over sleeve.  Has anyone come up with a decent mounting solution plus heat sink?

There are many different ways to mount them, in planes most are sunk into the foam so the air passes over to cool the heat sink, in quads they are sometimes mounted to plates via the SMA collar, depends what it's going in really.

Hi m8,

This is a pic of my 800mw 1.2G VTX mounted to a piece of aluminium using heat transfer tape and fixed in place with PVC electrical tape, which may seem crude, but it works ok...The end of the plate is drilled so i can simply mount it using servo screws into a wooden block in the wing....Seems to work fine, and this VTX can get hot if it's not on a sink of some kind.
The ali plate soaks up the heat while you prep to fly, and once in the air it stays really cool. Sinking them into insulating foam is a really bad idea IMO, although plenty of people do it.

I came up with this solution on build I am doing now and and it works well.

Glue the side with 3 faces to foam
VTX goes on top side
2 small cable ties goes through and around the VTX to secure it. Quick, neat and removable.
This one is sized for the IRC 600mw VTX

I also use internally for mounting RX. Print with 1 shell and 15% infill and its as light as a feather.

That's a good idea, I used this technique on my Z3. Works well and hard wearing.
