The FuriBee DarkMax, my review
« on: December 03, 2017, 10:02:18 AM »

Hello all, and with apologies to English Trubines, who I know is still waiting for his DarkMax to be delivered.  Gearbest sent me one over to review... so I did :)

I received the FrSky BNF version - but I had a bad experience with the little D8 compatible rx that's supplied on it, so I swapped it over for a proper XM+ rx.  I then turned out to have a receiver issue anyway via the little plug that it connects to the FC with.

! No longer available

It's a nice quad, and flies pretty well out of the box.  Feels like it needs a little bit of PID work to sort out a few flutters.  At the time of writing it's coming up at £185, and I'm pretty sure it was cheaper just a week or two ago.  Gearbest do tend to move their pricing all over the place on a weekly basis, and enjoy using coupons to discount instead of normal pricing.. .that how it feels to me anyway.  I had a coupon from them a while ago to get it for $185 - USNOV29 not sure if this is still valid or not.

Here is my affiliate link to the product (or you can just go to the site a look it up if you don't like affiliate links) https://www.gearbest.com/brushless-fpv-racer/pp_765192.html?lkid=12186052

Hi Wayne, no sweat, my Darkmax arrived yesterday, finally, although its only been two weeks to be fair.

First impressions are its nicely put together, although i too will be putting an XM Plus in mine.

Talking of price, I paid £114 for mine delivered from Gearbest, so guess I bagged a bargain.

Gearbest just gave me the voucher code CyberMondayGB6 to get it for $159.99 which is a bit better if it helps anyone.  Personally, I wish they'd just have their base price lower instead of having a million coupons for everything.

  Hi Wayne,
Ok, my XM Plus micro receiver has arrived for my Darkmax.... Updated for RSSI on CH16....

I have been practicing using my indoor Tiny 7 Quad and find Angle Mode to work the best for me when flying a quad. Im assuming that it will be the same on the Darkmax as that is also running an F3 and Beta Flight?
Had it apart to fit the Lipo Strap and also the XM+...

I have a pair of 1500mah 4S Lipos for mine, not too outrageous then...lol

Angle mode is ok for taking it around LOS, but I would always recommend getting into acro flying ASAP for FPV flying.  Angle will fight you all the way around

:sparta:  After some fair bit of fiddling around, my Darkmax is almost sorted....Almost.

  Problem is Arming...:

Inside Betaflight, it will show as "Arming Allowed" and beeps seem to indicate all is OK.

Then when I connect the lipo and hit the Arming switch, I get beeping and a load of Red leds and no arming..?

Oddly when I first tried it inside, the props began to idle and it looked ok, went outside, switched on and it refused to Arm again...?

                                                                                               :vulture:

Also when you say " tried it inside, the props began to idle " I hope you mean the motors spun and you had removed the props. NEVER arm indoors with props on!

  Thanks for that, now fixed...:)

I had a little too much throttle range at the idle end....Needs to be 1000 to 2000 range.
With 4% Digital Throttle Idle selected (to keep the motors spinning) it was preventing arming. I also dialed in a little deadband to stop it jumping around at the Midpoints.  It's really picky on the throttle idle setting, but it is a safety feature, and a good one at that.
I can't help feeling this thing is a bit over propped, it gets into the hover about 30% throttle, solid as a rock though. Landing requires some delicate use of the throttle....needs a throttle curve methinks, the throttle expo puts the expo in at the wrong place as hover is not at 50% throttle, and no expo as you land either..? Its an animal for sure, so responsive its untrue.
