Wing Wing goes to Brazil... and mini Runcam Split 2 review!
« on: February 19, 2018, 10:40:21 PM »

Chaps,

Some footage from my holidays in Brazil earlier this year, hope you enjoy!

[WARNING - Audio volume might be a bit high - let me know!]

Part 1/2
<a href="http://youtu.be/9a-fiV8Tzf4" target="_blank" class="aeva_link bbc_link new_win">http://youtu.be/9a-fiV8Tzf4</a>

Part 2/2
https://youtu.be/EsR8gfHZcY8

I've also written a mini review on the Split 2 based on my experiences so far...

-----
>> Runcam Split 2 mini review

Im using my Split 2 on a Wing Wing Z-84 frame with a pan/tilt setup. I use a (GoPro) polarizing filter to help with the jello and increase contrast/saturation. To use the filter, I had to make an adapter from plywood the Split 2 RC25G lens diameter is ~17.5mm while the GoPro filter ID is ~23mm.

Pros
.Form-factor enabled me to create a small pan/tilt assembly for FPV with HD recording capabilities
.The WDR works great and has allowed me to capture some high-contrast footage that otherwise would have blown out on non-WDR cameras
.Audio output good quality and quite useful

Cons
.The infamous corner lines are there just look at the top right corner (using release FW 1.0)
.Not a great fan of the super wide angle lens (165deg diagonal FOV, corner distortion); wish there were some other lens options, ideally around the 100deg FOV.
.White Balance cant be set using the on-camera menus (but everything else is in there I think), only through app.
.GPS issues the Vector GPS v2 (GPS+Glonass) was struggling to acquire satellites. The issue was solved by wrapping up the camera cable with anti-EMI foil tape and grounding it.

Stuff Im not too bothered about
.The lines again Id rather have some HD footage than no footage at all but Im not using the footage for anything but my personal enjoyment.
.Slightly flat output; this is understandable due to the WDR tonal compression; +50 contrast on Power Director 15 seems to sort it out.
.The camera cable could be more flexible
.Native 1080p is only available for widest FOV; narrower FOV modes crop at the sensor and upscale to 1080p in-camera (this is not mentioned on the manual)

Overall fairly happy with the results.

Cheers

Great results from that setup - both in terms of distance/flight time and the resulting HD footage.  What a stunning place to fly as well !

Amazing plane the tiny Z84, I have one on build right now...Those black lines in the upper right corner have a firmware fix available now.
A bit of live downlink included would have made it more interesting, but yes, amazing footage...thanks for showing us...:)

Hi CK, ched, ET,

Thanks!

ET, I've installed the new Split FW... let's see if that solves it.

I tend to avoid adding the live downlink as the DVR on Fatshark Dominator loses sync over time and annoys me deeply. If you're really keen I can post the live recording unlisted, just let me know.

Cheers

PS: Some photos of the pan/tilt setup attached.

The Z84 is an interesting plane with a bit of a cult following.

I had to get a bit creative with the wing spar and its a bit tight in there to say the least.

Id like to see some more pics of the plane with the flight Lipo in it etc, just to see where you placed everything.

Yes, an unlisted clip of the downlink would be of interest on here for sure i think....:)

Love that tilt mech, its super simple...lol

Fantastic flight and a memory for sure.

Been to Sao Paulo quite a few times with work back in the day, it always rained at some point most days, but it was a great place....I particularly liked the cheeky takeoff and landing from that tiny beach, cute, well done....:)

Wow! yet again Charles.
I'm surprised with that sort of scenery you ever managed to leave Brazil.
I reckon I'd manage that landing 1% of the time -brilliant  ;)

Fantastic, another great video.  The landing was top notch as well, I bet it looks like you have less than 1 pixel to land on when you are coming in from a height :D

Thanks ET, Nick, CK!

The landing looks tricky but in practice it's not that bad... I even managed 2 landings just on LOS.

The key was approaching at low altitude and over the rocks, which was the only approach possible... The real issue were the 'invisible branches' on the over-the-rocks section which could chuck the plane in the water and that would be game over...

Next time I'm planning to take a Skipper XL which should give me some more landing options :)

Cheers!

Gundummy's tagline perfectly describes it... 'FPV - The unusual hobby of flying 's miles away from you in the hope you see it again.' :D

Haven't seen him around for a long time!

Cheers and thanks
