3D Mapping software
« on: March 06, 2018, 02:22:25 AM »

Hi All.
Just brought a block of land 24 acres and wanted to map it out with my pixhawk quad. It has a tiny2 gimbal and gopro copy so all fairly basic but for the amount I use it does the job well.
I have done some fairly good 2D stuff with it but have been looking at the 3D stuff and that would be awesome to really see the contour of the land. I have looked at Pix4D and Dronedeploy but other than a short free trial period they are fairly expensive.

Has any one got any good results out of some freeware?
Any tips greatly appreciated. Its only for hobby interest sake so dont want to spend a fortune.

Cheers

Try maps made easy.  Free trial based on a points system.  Can you geotag the images?

Where are you based too?  I've done a bit of mapping and 3d model creation over the last few years...

Thanks was looking at that last night. Looks like a good option for me.
I am living in China at the moment but just brought a block of land in NZ. Want to go back soon and get a decent map of the contour to help choose building sites etc.

Ah, a bit far from North Wales, otherwise I'd have offered to do a demo for you!

Maps made easy is a bit limited, but pretty easy to use.  The key thing is to get a decent overlap on images, and a height reference (pic from the quad on the ground before take off to use as a height ref.)

Easy to use sounds like what I need as a total mapping beginner. I have been playing with the setup in pixhawk and watched the maps made easy tutorials.
Was thinking of trying to geo ref the images. Pixhawk have a function to do this based on camera time and gps time.

Will give a go on the weekend and let you know how I go.

Hi Andy. Did a test flight over about a 70,000m2 area on  the weekend. I only have a go pro style camera with super fish eye so the stitching was not great. Will have to get the 90 deg lens for it.
Also the pictures were taken at 50m high. I geo referenced them based on time syncing to the Mission planner software. That seemed to work well. Only problem is the picture when viewed in Google maps is at 50m and not on the  ground. I have pictures from on the ground as a reference as just had the camera to 5 sec time lapse setup. but not sure how to apply that. Do you move the image in Google maps or is there a way to reference the height in maps made easy.

Cheers
