Fixed Wing Pusher Prop
« on: March 22, 2018, 08:44:32 PM »

Hello all,

I am putting a mini skywalker together to learn how to fly a fixed wing cheaply, I am not sure about the prop though.  The model needs a pusher prop but my question is;

Is a pusher prop a 'thing'??? Or do you just put an ordinary prop on backwards to make it a pusher???

Seems to me you 'could' do that but you might have to turn the motor cw and then the prop spinner might come loose.  When I search for a pusher prop on ebay, hobbyking etc there are little to no results and so they seem much less common that I would have first thought. I must be getting something wrong, using the wrong search term or otherwise.

Would someone please enlighten me?

Cheers in advance.

A pusher prop is a thing yes. There are two, Tractors and Pushers. Tractor is for motors facing toward and the prop on the front of the plane and Pushes with a rearward facing motor. The rotation is the opposite of a tractor prop.

Pusher props are a thing but you only need them for engines that are designed to run in one direction only.  For an electric motor just use any prop and reverse the motor if you need to.

Specifically..
Pusher props do exist, and are often called 'R' props. Opposite direction of rotation.
If your plane is a pusher, you can use a normal prop and it will work just as well, but you must mount it so the lettering faces the front of the plane. You will need to reverse the rotation direction of the motor (just swap any two of the three wires).
But beware the motor torque is now trying to undo the prop nut, so use loctite or a nyloc nut.
And do it up tight.
 :)

Thanks for taking the time to reply and sharing your expertise all, I appreciate the help.

I bought a couple of 6 x 5 apc e propellers and sounds like they might be just the job.  I have 3d printed a motor mount using polycarbonate that will raise the motor high enough to use a 6" propeller.  I'm not really sure how to figure the correct motor and prop size for it.  I bought some kit with the intention of building a foam-board wing and sort of thought I could re-purpose all of that - but I am probably mistaken!

Thanks for the link Steve.

I didnt even consider not adding the rudder - but Gordon doesnt add his from the outset in that build.  Tbh, 3 channels instead of 4 seems that it might suit my yet-to-be established flying skills a bit better, ... ;)

So, I'm still looking at making a foam wing - an FPV49 most probably

So, if I bought a CW rotating prop and put it on backwards and rotated it CCW it will stay on and be rotating in the correct direction to act as a pusher prop?  Is that correct?

No, the prop still has to turn cw, but the motor direction needs to be reversed since itís facing the wrong direction.

Good luck with the fpv49, Iíve built a couple of them and I enjoyed them. They tend to flutter if you go above 120kph so just be a little careful if youíre building for speed!

People do seem to get confused about pusher props.  All you need to make sure of is that the numbers printed/stamped on the prop are facing forwards and then reverse the motor if the air is going the wrong way when it spins.

Ok, thanks elmattbo and Loopdreams...some kit arrived today...could well be build day tomorrow ;D - I would do it tonight but I'm off to the pub.

I dont think it would be an intelligent move to start hacking into the foam after a couple of Ice Breakers  :P

On the other hand, you know how after a couple of beers something can seem like a really good idea after all..?
