LittleBee ESC Getting very hot
« on: May 03, 2018, 07:09:17 PM »

Have a new quad build which I note 1 LittleBee 30A esc is running very hot even when just bench testing.  All the esc's are of an identical design and are fed from a common power and separate BEC.  All have ov connections to the FC. So unsure what could cause this issue.  Can try swapping the feeds around but can only think the issue lies in the programming of the esc.  Unfortunately the interface uses Blheli and donít have an USB programmer.

Check that none of the motor bolts are touching the internal windings. If you have a multimeter check that there is not continuity between motor bolts and motor wires and batt connections!
You can try and swap motors on corners. If the hot esc stays hot it's an issue with the esc if the other one gets hot it's a motor issue.

Hope that helps?

Just thought can you not use the pass through facility on your FC to run BLHeli app and check the programming? This does depend on your FC supporting pass through.

Just unscrewed the motor and confirmed no short to earth exists. Have quite a lot of spare motors so wil try a quick lash up as dont wish to start swapping motors arround as the other three motors and esc's run fine.

FC is a omnibus F4 SD but unsure if this has a pass through cability. Still very much in the dark with the required settings for the FC so it all a bit of a steep learning curve using Betaflight.

One strange thing I have noticed is that after about a 30secs of running the FC ramps up the throttle for some reason.

You should be fine connecting into BLHeli configurator.  Grab a copy of it here https://github.com/blheli-configurator/blheli-configurator/releases

Connect up your quad with USB (take props off obviously) and then plug in a battery and read the setup.  It might be worth mentioning (not to scare you or anything) but I had 2 20a Little Bee's burst into flames on the bench.  Don't run up the motors high :)

Well dwnloaded the code for win64 and cant establish coms with the esc. Do I have to enable anything in Betaflight to use pass through?

No, just make sure it's not connected to Betaflight at the time then it should connect using the same settings as Betaflight.

Thanks now have coms established so re-flashed the esc. Just waiting for the soldering iron to warm up to see if a spare motor now causes the unit to run hot again.

That's a pity. I doubt you will be able to get supplier to replace it but worth a try. Might be worth have a look with a magnifying glass at the esc in case there is any stray solder blobs causing a short.

Since the board is most likely a clone and the supplier is in China I think I will not be seeing any replacement. New esc now on order.

Thanks all for the advice on pass-through at least that saved me £5 on a USB programmer.
