Hot Melt Glue gun - light, Medium or Heavy?
« on: April 27, 2012, 08:33:43 PM »

I have a pathetic, small hot melt glue gun. It heats and dispenses so slowly I cannot get a smooth continuous bead to - say fix a servo in.

This link http://www.kitepackaging.co.uk/scp/Glue_Guns_and_Sticks/Glue_Guns.html shows different types.

Which type would you recommend for general fixing around 'foamies' ??

i.e. what size of stick / gun is best?  8, 12, 16, 18mm ???

I use a 12mm gun I got from Wilkinsons for a fiver ... you have to leave it 10 mins to heat up properly before the glue gets hot enough to stay melted for more than 5 seconds though.

f me, theyre expensive

I just use the one I picked up in b&q
its a stanley one similar to this

its great, high setting is too hot for foam
low setting is spot on

can pump out a lot of glue in one go if you need it, stay hot enough to have a quick adjustment if needed

At those prices you have money to burn, or melt in this case.  ;D

Mine is a cordless one from Lidl and probably cost less than a tenner. It does just fine and has no variable setting. EPP or Elapor are OK but it's too hot for Depron, so I use UHU Por on that.

BTW you don't need a bead round a servo. Either a blob on each servo mounting lug, or a blob on the side you are mounting against a surface.

oh, to add

i dont go for a smooth bead when glueing, just lick your finger and run it along the glue while its still hot for a smooth finish
you will burn your finger if you dont use enough spit!

Thanks lads - and no I do not "have money to burn" - not even as a pun.

The link I chose at the beginning of this Thread was chosen as it showed a range of guns from light to heavy - NOT because of its' prices.

Right, so 12mm wins the competition - now I'll start looking for one at the right price, preferably with adjustable heat setting ????
