Servo Advice
« on: August 12, 2014, 02:45:52 PM »

I'm currently thinking and planning my first fpv plane build in addition to my F550 Hexacopter fpv and I have a couple of questions about servos.

Whilst I can see the advantage of using Futaba's S-Bus system on my Hex when connected to my DJI controller, I can't see the advantage of digital servos on a  Skywalker 1900, say or am I missing something?

And don't digital servos use more juice than analogues or is the difference immaterial?

You don't need digital servos on a skywalker, it just doesn't need that sort of precision.

If you have very large control surfaces and specifically need high precision then digital is worth going for. I have just ordered some digi servos for my LOS 3D plane as the surfaces on those are so huge that the minute amount of slop in the centre equates to a lot of movement at the control surface.

Yes they do more use juice, actually a fair bit more as they are constantly draining even just holding centred position.

My advice for servos for a Skywalker would be the Hs65-HB's, especially if you are using an auto pilot. Having been flying for many years the only servos that still feel brand new even after 4-5 years usage are the HB servos. Plastic gears wear or break and metal gears start to slop. The autopilot puts much more wear on the servo gears so this is where the HB's shine.

That's exactly the advice I was looking for, many thanks! I'm sure there will be more questions as I go through the journey.....😊
