MG90 servos - crap?
« on: April 15, 2016, 07:21:33 PM »

I used to love these servos but I bought 8 last batch and 3 of them (of the 4 I've had on airframes so far) have failed within 6 months. WTF?

Bad batch?

In the meantime good old HXT90s that I've had since 2011 are still going strong.

Anyone else had these failing on them? I bought them from HobbyKing UK

I've had no issue with the ones i got, but then again they weren't from HK but GiantCod.

It's funny - when I first started I used to swear by the old HXT90's but was told they were cheap crap and I'd need metal geared ones - the only time I ever had an issue with the HXT90s was when using them in a tricopter, because they stripped on every hard landing - on planes though? Never once had an issue unless I crashed horribly. They worked well in planes like the Easystar, AXN, Bixler etc.

  Hi Steve,

I agree, a lot of folk banging on needlessly about how good metal geared servos are. The reality is, that these Chinese metal gears in these servos are made from Sintered metal, a form of powdered metal technology. Strong enough, but not a lot stronger than good old nylon or plastic TBH.
If you are flying a plane, nylon gears are fine, loads from flying surfaces are low....Crashes are different, so are tail servos on Tricopters.
My pet hate.?..Digital Servos. Whiny squeaky current gobblers...lol.

..Hey..
Yeah... I've got ancient rtf stuff with nylon gears and they're ok still. I don't know why but recently when 'building' up new models I've found myself going for metal geared servos, but that's down partly to a similar experience Steve W talks of, ie ordering a bag of them to find several duds.... bah!..(but I am expecting them to perform better). Er, but not just with MG90's.. other nylon geared servos...
Just been installing some 'MR RC' and some 'G-SUN' servos.... let's hope they are ok eh..
