that's a short flight time Adam- have you set it up as a speed demon?

To be fair I have set it up for speed. 1700kv on a 7x5... and only 3,100mah... and I do a lot of WOT for speeds of 150-175 kmph

I'm going to try it with a 5,000mah 4s next time

Just finished final walk round on the Mini Drak and she's good to go, weather tomorrow looks ok for a maiden so I'll hit the flying field early and have a go.
A couple of pic's and spec's
Light weight lam covering
4s 5200mAh
2.4gHz immersionrc VTx
UHF RX immersionrc
Micro Vector with GPS

After waiting what seemed an age I managed to maiden the Mini Drak, it was really cold, dark and surprisingly windy over 100ft but all went well until I landed. Only time I can remember breaking a prop on landing, need to program a break in the ESC to stop it spinning on landing.
I did go home and pick up another prop but only had a half flight, when I got back to the field I was just too cold to fly for too long, this will be my mountain and beach plane, some thing I can put in the back of the Mini and hit the wilds with the minimum of fuss.
I've only got a GPS speed on the Mini Vector and that gave a summary of 109mph top speed on my second flight, cant wait to open the taps and see what this can do.
Chuffed  ;)

Glad you got it in the air! They really are great planes, small, easy to launch, stable but really agile and with good efficiency! Pretty much everything you'd want in a plane!

Just out of interest, roughly what was the all in build cost?

Was impressed with the flying so far, bit more set-up and I'll run it back to back with the Z3 and the full size Drak to see how they all "feel" in the air. River is in full flood down by my normal flying site and its a great back drop, roll on the flying weather.

Just out of interest, roughly what was the all in build cost?

As I tell the misses it's all just over 10 quid lol, all set ups are different and I've never added it all up incase it scared me, easy to work out from my spec list and add a few quid for "stuff".

Help to choose power plant
« Reply #278 on: April 20, 2018, 09:12:20 PM »

Hi all,

I'm new to this "world" and I'm a bit lost (I mainly use mini quads). I just bought a mini Drak (if you want to try something, better to choose something good) but I don't know what power plant to use.

I would like flight times over 20 mins because I want to do somewhat medium range, until 5.8GHz video failure. Speed is not a must (I know it's going to be faster than my freestyle quads). I was thinking about iNav, with GPS (for Return To Home) and a Cobra CP-2814 1450kv with a 7" or 8" on 4S 5200mAh batteries, but that's what I wonder will be ok.

I'm from Spain, and here LiPos are pretty expensive and hard to come by, so I usually use Hobbyking EU warehouse. I thought about those Multistar 4S 5200mAh because they are not expensive and are easy to get for me, but... Should I use 5S, maybe 6S?

So, summarizing, if you could help me choose:

1) Motor (not asking for a specific model, but kv number and motor size).
2) ESC (again, not asking for an exact model, just a safe Amp figure).
3) Prop (size and... what about folding props. Not too useful is I'm going to be always the throttle, but better ask)
4) Batteries max size and number of cells.

Again, I'm aiming at somewhat long flight times (I know, for mini quads guys anything longer than 4 mins is long, but I really want to go a few kilometers away without a hurry to come back). I thought about getting a TBS Caipirinha 2 that with a 2814 1050kv advertises +1 hour flight times with a 4S 6000mAh, but for me, you can't beat the aesthetics of the Mini Drak. Even if the build gets me a little bit scared.

Many thanks in advance and excuse me if I don't express myself right in english.

Something around 1100-1500kv will give you a good balance of flight time and power IMO.

Whatever motor you choose- look at the max current rating and then add 20A. It's likely the motor will draw a max burst of 40A- so a 60A esc is likely suitable.

4s IMO.

If you have never flown a wing before then you will crash it. Or at least land it v heavily a few times. I wouldn't go too heavy on the lipo. 4000maH would be a good starting point. If you really get into it you could buy a few bigger ones to really stretch the flight time out.

1 hour flight time on the tbs cap2 sounds really boring. 20mins and I'm bored usually!

Thank you, sir.

This will be my second fixed wing, as my late Reptile S800 lost a battle versus a high voltage wire a few weeks ago.

I'll try to get my hands on a Cobra CP-2814 1450kv, a Blheli ESC 80A (I prefer to be on the safe side) and 5.2Ah Multistar.

I don't think a 8" prop will be too much for that motor on 4S, what do you think? What  pitch?

What about laminate it. Do you think the benefits will outweigh... The weight? It should make it stronger, right?

Thanks again.

I would try an 8x5 APC style for starters and see what the amp draw is like.
I partially laminated mine, just the underside and leading edges ,mainly so I can wipe it down ,as the fields round me are usually  always quite muddy.

what do the specs say on the motor ? they will suggest prop size and esc. turnigy plush escs are good imo. I wouldn't spend crazy money on top spec ones.

The multistars batteries are ok for flight time butbwont handle punishment. the drak isn't the perfect long distance cruiser. but the batteries are just for this. so would suggest you consider a better performing battery ? unless you really are going to just cruise around.

So, everything is on the way, except for the motor and the props.

-Frsky 80A Blheli_32 ESC
-Matek F405-Wing flight controller
-BN-880 GPS
-Corona DS339HV servos
-Multistar 4S 5200mAh batteries
-AKK FX2 Ultimate VTx

Still, not sure about the motor/prop combination. I had, kind of have (various separate pieces now), a Reptile S800 with a 1900kv motor, 7050 prop and 1500mAh that did 140km/h (GPS speed) and around 15mins of flight.

Wouldn't a Mini Drak with a 1800kv, 7050 prop and a 5200mAh do more than 20mins and  +140km/h max speed? I'm looking for the highest speed that I can get, but with +20mins flight times cruising.

Cobra motors are being hard to get. Any good alternative?

I can't find any motor/prop data but these (attached). 1700kv is the old motor version and the 2000kv looks a bit out for what I'm looking for:

Thanks!
