Drone Debate in Parliament - includes Shakespeare quotes! Yep!

A further spin off to this BS,( probably should not post this as I am really peed off),  a smashing little easy going rc club I belong to has just been given notice to leave out flying site at the end of September as the tenant farmers landlord, The  Crown Estate, that’s the queen and the royal family, has decided in their wisdom that due to the new regulations regarding “drones” they do not want any model aircraft operated from their land so as to avoid any  involvement in potential issues. We’ve been there for 9 years with not one single complaint or issue. The local ATC know of the site and even publish a NOTAM. Even the local police have visited and given us a thumbs up.

And that is why I raised Q10 with the DfT.

10.  There is no clear and unambiguous definition of "drone". I have previously contacted the CAA, DfT & AAIB and cannot illicit a definition. Will this be clarified in order to avoid confusion, misunderstanding and incorrect application?

That's gonna effect a multitude of people who wish to go to their local beach and fly anything R/C as the beach area between high and low tide is Crown Property !!!
I looked into this before my first FPV flight as I wanted to educate myself regarding where I stood if an official rocked up!... So until I get notification from HRH I will be flying carefully from any beach I deem it safe to do so...

BigT I feel your pain  :'( There must be a way to get a listening ear?

Regards RBS

This turned out not to be as straightforward as we first thought. . As soon as the farmer decided to retire he returned the land, which is part of a larger estate, to Crown Estates keeping the farm house as his residence. The new tenant farmer told us that Crown Estates would not let us have the use of the land as the major estate holder did not want any further subletting and Crown Estates did not want any model flying from its holdings. We then got the BMFA officer Andy Simmonds to contact the Crown Estates for clarification of the situation regarding model flying as we have a 9 year fault free record. Turned out that when the farmer returned the land he also made a noise complaint. The tenant farmer was quite happy to have us 900 meters away from his house as long as he was getting the £3K cash per year for the last 9 years but as soon as the cash cow died he made a complaint. One complaint was enough for Crown Estates to remove model flying from the holdings.
So thats the facts.

The irony being of course that farm machinery is much noisier than little planes - can't win 'em all :(

3 x 9 = £27k
In light of his attitude, do you think it is now time to enquire if he declared this cash income to the Inland Revenue?
Just a suggestion as you appear to have nothing now to lose.

Also did that 3K a year include Vat and a receipt?

Yesterday we visited a farmer on the other side of the valley who was open to us scouting out his land and if all goes well we will have another home for the club.

Further clarification from The Crown Estates Agency is they are banning all “dangerous” sports and activities on crown land. Included in the list is game shooting for sport, RC model flying. Apparently exceptions are given to the royal family so Phil the Greek will be OK to shoot pheasants from his wheelchair at Sandringham.
