Oh, this popped back up - I feel I should explain further.

Yes james, it'a best to believe the low-end of social blade.  My YouTube earnings over the last 30 days is $26.15 - if you want to live of pure YouTube ad revenue you have to be in the millions of subscribers.  Don't forget that in order to earn actual revenue from ads on YouTube a user has to let a pre-roll ad run for 30+ seconds or actually click on one of the little box ones that appears at the bottom of a running video or one of those on the other part of the YouTube interface.  You can see why it doesn't happen all that much.

So my earnings right now mainly comes from affiliate payments and traditional writing.  I'll be aiming to do some traditional writing for magazines every month in addition to anything else I do.  Although it seems weird, there is a while little subsection of people who turn to magazines for their primary info source on stuff.

Who said tshirts ?  Dogz - one for you :D

Actually, I'm not expecting anyone to really go for those ones.  My own logo is one for me and that I force on my family - but I have a bunch of design ideas for FPV inspired tshirts.  Again, it's not something I'd expect to bring in much on... but all these little bits and pieces add up.

Ultimately though, I'm not expecting to make it big, or even make anywhere near my previous salary.  I'd been on autopilot for the last 10 years at work - I managed to make my work reasonably flexible which allowed my wife to get on with her far better career and be able to rush around doing the school pickups and things.  I muddled along, not enjoying myself, but not wanting to change employers for fear of losing that flexibility.

A few changes in curcumstances - call it health/life/age related - whatever - Seemed to have pushed me past the point of being able to carry on doing what I was doing.  There was no way I was going to be able to carry on working where I was without having some sort of event.

Happily, I haven't been the main earner in the family for about 15 years (thanks IBM payrises, I think my last one was over 10 years ago) so my salary impact is less than the other one.  I'm also so so lucky to have a very supportive and understanding wife - who also likes the fact that all the housework/washing/school stuff/and meal preperation is done so she can spend more time chilling out during the evenings and weekends.

So yeah - as Steve mentioned, it's low outgoings - but mainly the trick to a happy life is finding something to do that makes you happy and get on with doing it :)

Obviously, I'll be doing a video explaining all of this - it looks bad for flying this week, so there's an excuse for you

Just catching up on the forum as I was away for a bit, all the best to you Wayne and I hope you can make it work out for you! It sounds like you are setting out with the right expectations and a bit of a plan so hopefully it's successful!

Have to say that I'm a bit jealous, I can totally relate to the feeling of just trundling along in the day job without having much motivation, props to you for taking the risk and ditching it! :D

In an attempt to stop procrastinating and just getting on with it, here's my stupid face to explain what I've done and what I'm doing.

I've not watched the video yet but I'd like to welcome you to self-employment and I'm very glad to see (in the thumbnail) that you're taking it seriously by beginning to grow a hobo-beard!

Wayne, have you thought about livestreaming your bench sessions on Twitch? Lots of people would like to watch the thought process behind a build etc and you'd be surprised at how many people don't mind donating the odd 5-quid here and there during a stream. Perhaps more likely to do so than Patreon where they don't get instant gratification (or even a thank you live on air).

You can also put the resulting video onto Youtube for a bit extra traffic...

Hey Steve - I've not really considered the live streaming just because there's not that often I spend lots of time doing one thing, I do tend to jump around a bit.  Also, my camera angle is terrible for seeing what I'm doing - I tried to film some soldering the other day,and got 15 minutes of my own elbow :)

We'll see though, I'm open to try allsorts

(The beginnings of the beard is only there as my wife is away in Hong Kong, so I'll smarten myself up by tomorrow)

IMPORTANT to do what makes you happy...... we always somehow manage to get by in life and being intelligent you will always find an opportunity or solution if required as a last resort.
Life has got a habit of presenting curve balls and alternatives that take you by surprise so welcome the changes.
I believe our destiny is set but how we eventually get there is the interesting bit.

You enjoy doing the channel and we enjoy watching......
If you have patrons great but enjoy where it leads you.

Good luck mate.
