MiniAirShow, May 12th-13th at Popham Airfield
« on: March 18, 2018, 01:24:49 AM »

Just wondered if anyone was going along to this.  It's not something I've been to before, but it's organised in large part by one of the guys that does the "Let's Drone Out" podcast that I've been on a few times - which is why I heard about it.

There's some competitions - quad and wing racing, indoor stuff, and some open flying (although you'll need to buy a specific ticket to fly, and have valid insurance and for FPV be on 25mw only), but there's vendors there and a bar and some shows and stuff.  A bunch of other YouTube folks like Painless360 and AndyRC should be there as well (and possibly David Winderstall)

Spectators also get to go in for free - due to the fact it would be huge amounts of hassle to jump through the hoops the council have for this.  I'm going, but not flying - not because I'm a cheapskate (although I am) but because I can get too focused on flying at any meetup and I'd really like to hang out, meet up with some people and look at other peoples builds etc.

Anyone else going ?  Mini-fpvhub meetup perhaps.

Website with directions etc is here http://miniairshow.co.uk/

I have been every year, and have podium-ed in the team race every time.  ;D

It is always a great event, but that was partly down to the location at Hidden Valley. I am sure this year will be great fun too though.

Sadly i can not make it this year.

This and all other events around the UK can as always be found on the calendar here:

I'll be going, I'm quite new to fpv quads and am not too far away from it, be interesting to see what the UK has to offer, after watching nearly all the you tube stuff being in and around America and I'm sure the following over here is much smaller but it will be nice to see people in one place with the same thing on their minds, lets hope the weather holds up.

Dont expect anything on the standards of America or an event with a huge budget. All of our events in the UK are put on by volunteers with their own cash or what ever pennies we can scrape together from sponsors.

What makes our events so good are the people. Everyone is always so friendly and happy to help out, talk to each other and generally have a god laugh.

Here is a video i made of the 2016 MAS for an example:

Iím a member at Popham Drone Zone so will be going but not flying.  Should be good to see how Fast the professionals are.
If the weathers good should be a good turnout.

Looks like the sun (canít really remember what it looks like) has finally made an appearance today!

I'm going along to watch but not fly; partly because I don't think my skills are up to it, but also because I currently have 7 projects at various stages of progress, but nothing actually flyable at the moment - I'm coming to terms with the fact that I'm a builder, not a flier  :-X

Probably going for the Saturday, but close enough that I might come back for the Sunday if the weather is good.

I'm hoping to get along on Sunday if the weather looks reasonable.

are there going to be some trade stands or somewhere I can stick my face in some goggles to try them out?  I need glasses for close-range stuff so I'm a bit hesitant to buy unseen off the internet, having not done any FPV before & not knowing if I'll be able to focus on anything

thanks

Andy

I think so, I know Airjacker is going to be there at least.  I should be going up on Sunday now (dragging the rest of my family kicking and screaming) and I have -6 diopters installed in my Dom3's.  You are most welcome to have a look through mine - although it might depend on your prescription

I'm going today. Weather looks best today should be fun. But not flying sadly I don't think I have the skills. I'd like to put my face in some goggles too as I think I'm ready to make that sort of investment.

Apologies badger - I went all day Saturday and intended to go today, but I've knackered my knee from all the standing around, so I've ended up staying at home whining and taking naproxen.  I did manage to meet and talk to lots of lovely people on Saturday, but nobody who identified themselves as DS123.

no worries CurryKitten, hope your knee is feeling better.  I had a go on a sim, a bit of a chat with the two guys who were manning it & a look in some Eachine box goggles, so all was not lost.  the goggles looked quite good, but you lose a bit of the effect if you're having to hold them a foot away from your face to focus  ;)  I can't justify the price of FatSharks+diopters at the moment, so I'll have to figure out how to fit my glasses into a set of box goggles, or something.

Have a look at Eachines ev100. They have diopter adjustment built in (only to about -4 I think). OK so they are not up to Fatshark quality but for the money (£80) they are great. It depends on what you are used to really. The image is good colour and contrast wise but it is a little away from you, but perfectly flyable. You can also get a little DVR for them at about £10. Works well.

I have the Eachine Ev100 and am looking to upgrade as I have quite a lot of problems with them. The battery isn't very good and although there is a battery meter onscreen I normally turn it off as it's quite large and displays the band channel information too. Anyway I fell out of the sky last week when it just switched off in mid flight without warning. Another thing I have an issue with is the DVR (tried using an old DVR Pro and then went and got the Eachine one) I find this too drains the battery too much to be useful. I also can't get on with putting it into the right mode to record and don't really use it. Lastly I sometimes get one eyepiece losing signal (might just be mine) which works again when you unplug it and plug it back in again.

Long story short is that I'm thinking that I need to make that investment into something decent. I'm thinking Fatshark (expensive) or my cheap option Aomway Commander v1. Still undecided which way to go and am waiting to see if any discounts come up now new versions of both have just been released.

CurryKitten: I did see you at Popham but thought it would be a bit weird to just say hello. Anyway you had a mouthful of Ham sandwich at the time. A little disappointing that there weren't many stalls there I came with pockets full of cash expecting to buy stuff as I normally only get from BangGood. I really liked watching the air display though but found the drone races a little difficult to follow.
