GPS Woes
« on: April 29, 2018, 07:43:33 PM »

I'm putting together a nano talon with a mini pixhawk and to save weight I was aiming to use one of these...

... however I can't decide if it is just crap or faulty as it takes forever (>15 minutes) to find 4 satelites, it might eventually find 6 or 7 but easily loses them all momentarily before coming back to 4 and it won't find any in doors or in the garage. In comparison, the original gps finds 5 satelites within minutes and in less than 10 minutes it has 10 or more.

It could just be that it needs a more 'open' area to find them given it's a much smaller antenna.

Needless to say, I'm a bit reluctant to 'let it lose' as it is.

I do have a separate compass board in my bits box I could use in conjunction with a better mini-gps if anybody knows of one.

Anybody got an alternative mini gps/compass they could recommend?

Cheers

Chris

I evaluated 2 of these for my store. Crap. Don't use them...

Recommendations:
In large size - Beitian BN800 (but in must have genuine cirocomm antenna…) These are awesome…

In mini a BN180 -  performance is significantly reduced, but acceptable for small lightweight:

Thanks for the confirmation. I’ll try the BN180 and a separate compass (which I already have).

Just a little update...whilst I wait for a new gps I realised I had a spare one from an aeromax osd that I ordered a while back. I wired this one in and in no time at all it was reading 12 sats in the workshop. A huge improvement. After de-casing it it’s only 2 grams heavier so will be fine.

Interestingly, the crappy minigps has a compass board that can be detached from the gps module and measures about 12mmx5mm and weighs less than 2 grams. Since this works and is so small and light, I left this in the model. I know the use of a compass in a plane is often debated, but I’ve always used them.
