3D Printed Spitfire from 3dlabprint
« on: May 17, 2018, 02:31:41 PM »

I do love the idea of growing a plane from my 3D printer. So when flitetest reviewed the 3dlabprint.com P38 that they were sent, I had to have a go.

Drone 5 has already completed one and I have to say it looks lovely (http://www.fpvhub.com/index.php/topic,52719.0.html), so here's my build thread of my progress. I already had a Wanhao Duplicator 4 3D printer but unfortunately the print bed wasn't really big enough for the 3D models supplied. As the Wanhao was getting a little long in the tooth (thats my excuse and im sticking to it), I took the opportunity to get a Creality CR10 (not the S) 3D printer from Gearbest.com. This has a much bigger print area of 300x300x400 and so it would be plenty big enough to print these sorts of models and more besides.

So after a bit of tinkering with the heated bed, trying different tapes and glues to hold the PLA to the bed, I found that a LokBuild adhesive sheet was the best. I'd tried untreated glass, watered down PVA glue, kapton tape, white masking tape, and also a strange mixture of watered down PVA glue wiped with acetone. This last option was so strong that it was almost impossible to remove any print from the build plate. All the other options gave lacklustre performance and/or were prone to damage after trying to pry the part off using a spatula knife thingy.

The wings are printed using 3dfilaprint PLA white and I'll be starting on the fuselage pieces next.

Not sure what happened to the last pics but Ive added them again to the post, thanks Drone 5.

Today I made progress on the fuse and the tailplane, glueing the various pieces together. I've tinkered with my extruder settings in Simplify 3D as the .factory files that come with this kit are really meant for a Prusa I3 which has the filament stepper right above the hot end. The CR10 and (CR10s) has the filament stepper around 15 cm away and so the retraction settings (if left as they were supplied) would result in stringing within the fuselage. I adjusted my retract to 3.7mm and this has solved the stringing issue.

The stringing itself was pretty harmless as it was all within the interior of the parts and if you use opaque PLA it wouldn't be seen.

Heres a picture of the wing against the fulelage and without the nose.

Have you glued your fingers together yet? I always seem too whilst assembling the sections together. ;D
