Cloning a Taranis X9 Plus
« on: May 23, 2018, 12:13:17 PM »

Hi all, so today I took delivery of a brand new X9 Plus from T9and I want to clone my old X9 Plus to the new one, so I have an exact duplicate, models, radio global settings, Amber voice etc etc etc.

Can anyone give me link to the A to Z how to do this or explain how in simple non layman terms please?
I use Open Tx Companion on a Windows 10 PC.
Thanks in advance.

  Hi Big T,

The most important thing is the Model Library file with all your Model parameters.
You can save this file to your Laptop by dragging it out of your existing Taranis.

The other way is to duplicate the SD Card. I would suggest removing the SD Card to do this.

The Firmware versions of both Transmitters also needs to be the same, do this first, making the new TX like the old one if they are different.

Does this mean you will end up with two working Transmitters then..?

Footnote: There is a Guy called Richard in my Club who has had similar problems where he has a distinct lack of range and the problem appeared to be TX related. After some debate with T9, in the end he insisted the TX was replaced, which they did albeit reluctantly. It seems to be sorted now, but he is still a bit paranoid about his range. His was an LBT setup too.

i will end up with 2 working tx but will sell on the first one....or.......stick a UHF module in it.  Going to be interesting to see if the range and RSSI read outs are different. Checking this afternoon.

  Hi Big T,
If the problem is the "Tee Board" power pcb, then it's not going to work with any Module UHF or otherwise.

Remember, you can also stick in a FrSky 2.4G Module and even run International Firmware in it.

Be interesting to see the outcome of this.

Really weird result today. All swapped over to the new TX but the RSSI remains low.  For example r8 RX out of the plane and on the bench outdoors, tx 1 meter away, no concrete or metal near. RSSI reads 80, SWR antenna uncovered is 1 covered is 17 returns to 0 then 1 when uncovered.  I am going to do proper range testing tomorrow if the weather is OK.
ps test on X4r and XS rx where the same.

  Hi Big T,

If you are referring to the RSSI numbers as reported directly from your Taranis vocal or on the LCD of your TX, then 80 / 85db is quite normal close range for example on an X8R receiver.  Alarm bells sound around 45db or you can adjust the level yourself depending on your preference.
It's a different story when you display RSSI on iNAVs OSD. On my L9R, I simply connected the RSSI signal wire and got a reliable RSSI reading which was very stable and dropped slowly as range increased.
With the tiny XM Plus receiver, reporting on Channel 16 via SBUS, it jumps around a lot. Im assuming because it coming down the SBUS line, which is not ideal. A dedicated RSSI wire is better.
Try and separate your RX antennas as far apart as possible, in particular if its a Telemetry capable receiver.

Yeah that sounds like expected behaviour, logarithmic scale or some such.

All swapped over OK, only issue was with the trims on all the models due to the calibration differences with the gimbals and sliders etc. Biggest problem was with the iNav Controllers. Previously sorted controllers are like starting from scratch.
