Whats the best sim for MacBook?
« on: July 04, 2018, 10:00:45 PM »

Hi.  Bought a Walkera furious 215 and it came with a passcode for MR Drone but i can't activate my account.  Is there a better sim I can use with MacBook?  It came with a  Devo7 Tx and dongle lead.

Have a look at FPVFreerider I think there is a free trial version that has just 1 flying site and you can't alter the quad parameters. It will let you test if it works well on your mac and with your tx. Full version is about £6 and there is FPVFreerider Recharged which is the same but with slightly bigger levels and more levels available for a little more than the original version. The physics aren't bad but not great.
Velocidrone is one that also does IOS the physics are better and it uses BetaFlight code to do pids, and rates etc. I think it's about £16. There is a free one that has limits but you can use it to test.

Velocidrone by a country mile. Does mac and linux. It's arguably the best. https://www.velocidrone.com/

Liftoff, 25% off in the sale atm. Needs a faster machine to run it. https://store.steampowered.com/app/410340/Liftoff/

Rotor rush is good tho im not a fan of subscriptions.

This tricky part will be getting that devo 7 to play nicely.

I vote Velocidrone too.  LiftOff is prettier, but takes an age to load a course on my iMac.  Velocidrone isn't exactly super-quick either, but as a sim it feels the closest to a real quad (IMO obviously)

I'm not entertaining something I'd have to pay a monthly fee for though

Freerider gets my vote, in a 'jump on quick and have a blast' kind of way.
If I want anything more than that, I go and fly a real one ;) :)

As if by magic, Drone magazine was out yesterday, featuring the sim comparison

The difficulty is both liftoff and velocidrone are unfinished and receiving new updates. Until recently I'd have recommended liftoff as the better sim (lots of customization options). Tho velocidrones latest update has put it back in the lead for me. Tho both would benefit from some wind options.

Wonder why they didnt include Rotor Rush in their comparison. It is still by far the most realistic in terms of feel for me. Plus they have Tiny Whoops, which are actually the most fun part of sims imo.  ;D

Probably because it's a monthly subscription service. People are slowly accepting a software by subscription model but it is IMHO a slow acceptance.

Do you think the physics and models are better than Velocidrone? I'm not too bothered by graphics but closest to real flying would be good.

I wrote it, and I wasn't going to shell out on a subscription based anything - I don't care how good it is.  Sims are a useful tool for learning stuff, or doing something when the weather is bad, but it's not like I'm on them all the time... a subscription-based model is stupid (IMO obviously)

Ah ok makes sense. I am sure if you asked they would have given you a free license for the review (if you say it is the best haha) or there is also a free trial version.

Yes i think RR flies far better than Velocidrone, but others have told me that you have to adjust the settings to get VD (lol) flying at its most realistic. Like Wayne, i do not use the sims all the time so have not spent hours tuning it. RR just flies out the box so to speak, with the Tiny Whoop stuff being near perfect*.

*I say near perfect as i dont think any of the sims are actually perfect, they all feel a little too floaty imo.
