Decisions decisions
« on: July 16, 2018, 09:32:32 PM »

Hi all,
Still planning my next fixed wing fpv set up.
In the past I've used Scherrer UHF for the RC and 1.3ghz for video. Ground station has been an Eagleeyes diversity with a skew planar and helical antenna.

I'm now thinking of a set up more in line with the UK regs.
So how about a Frsky 868mhz tx module and receiver for the rc?. Then for the video how about 5.8gz vtx and then an antenna tracker, diversity receiver and a high-gain helical?

If all the above makes sense then the choice is what actual gear to choose. If I go for the Frsky then I'll need a new tranny for it to fit in to - so what is a decent compatible tranny?  Nothing fancy, probably need 8+ channels, but no bells and whistles as my flying style is just pottering at reasonably slow speed.
If I go for the 5.8 option, high gain helical and antenna tracker then which tracker is best as in simple, reliable and good quality.

All the above is with the caveat of wanting to keep a good long range confidence.

Any thoughts?

Why use legal gear to fly illegally?

Sounds like a backward (and expensive) step to me....5.8G Video @ 25mw is not a long range setup IMO and the tracker will be expensive with fussy 5.8G antennas.

I also dont think 868mhz is a legal frequency in the UK, but it is in Europe.

459mhz is a legal UK frequency and has been for many, many years and with good antennas even the permitted lower power will get you a fair bit of range.

If you fly beyond visual LOS, its illegal anyway, hell, you can do 6kms on 2.4G with an XM Plus RX.

I agree with ET, I have used Rlink 459 channel hopping uhf in the air and on the ground. Itís good for 1k on the ground and I am told 26k airborne. The 5.8 video gives out way before the RC control, 25 mw wonít get you past LOS IMHO, unless you have a very good tracker but even then not much further. Itís ok for small quads but I would never put it in any FPV model on safety grounds alone. Tried it back in the day and was thankful I had RTH set up first! Whatís a worse offence using 1.2 video and flying out of LOS or 600mw 5.8 and flying out of LOS? Doubt it will too much difference on the charge sheet or the sentence, your insurance will probably be invalidated anyhow. And if your the first one to be done under the new act they will make an example of you anyhow.

We have flown 1.2km on 5.8g 25mw with no tracker. So it can get you beyond LOS.

This was in the middle of no where with a single directional antenna tho.

I have seen 3k on a well set up 5.8 system. It was a dry summers day though and the model was around 500 feet.

 Hi Big T,

No, not LBT....FCC Firmware....Yes, 6kms on an XM Plus receiver. The 5.8G video was really snowy but the XM Plus was up for more.
It's a dedicated sensitive receiver only with no Telemetry to screw things up. The L9R is good for over twenty KMs in the right conditions.
We all know how badly damp conditions can affect 5.8G, which is why I dont like to use it on certain rigs. It has its uses though, for example it has little or no effect on your 2.4G Radio link. As a video carrier its shit.
