drop it like its hot - betaflight Q
« on: August 03, 2018, 07:00:30 PM »

when connected to betaflight via micro USB, my FC gets hot, well actually the carbon frame/top above it gets hot, i was using USB output on my dell monitor to connect that i think has more amps for charging phones etc, and the FC got so hot i could smell it, so changed to a different USB which i think seems better, but the question is, is it normal, is it safe, and is there a recommended amount of time to connect if it is normal?

oh well thats worrying then, i kinda assumed it was normal, it also disconnects kinda randomly, like if i connect it while holding, then put the quad down on my table, it often disconnects, and i have to unplug, then plug it back in to connect, i have installed all the drivers, maybe i have a dodgy china quad??
its just a little 120 to get me going

another prob im having is making a 3 way switch work in betaflight, im trying to set up flight modes, but at the mo 'angle' is on whether the switch is down, or in the middle, despite the fact i have set the range to be in the middle, horizon is fine, the range is set to the right, its the 'left' range that i cant seem to get beta flight to 'see', it just picks up middle , .and right, the little yellow marker wont move to the left at all if im making any sense, hope i am.
any help would be appreciated.

Have you checked that the channels all work correctly in the rx tab? Make sure they go to 1000 minimum, 1500 at centre, and 2000 at full deflection. Use the end points setting on your tx.

Normally a 3 way switch you have 3 flight modes. You normally just move the bottom and top of the yellow bits on the appropriate flight move selector set to the 3 way switch tx channel.
Remember when no mode is selected you are in Acro.

to explain further.. when the 3 way switch is in the bottom position, the little yellow marker in betaflight is reading 1500, when its in the middle position its also reading 1500, when its in the up position it reads a little more than 2000, i need it to read something like 900 when its in the the bottom position, otherwise i cant get into acro mode.. angle mode and horizon are fine.
hope that makes more sense.
as i was writing this you replied, so im now guessing its the end points, trouble is i cant find that in my tx, its a frsky xlite,. all new to me this opentx / betaflight stuff.

Well done. Check your failsafes. With props off on bench spool up and then switch off the tx. The props should stop spinning within a couple of seconds.

I had a similar problem on another brand of FC. Reason was that one of the mountings pads for the PCB were at a positive potential and another a zero. As a result current flowed through the mounting and carbon frame.

I was just about to say that it sounds like youíve got a short through your flight controller if itís getting hot. Iím surprised the computer kept powering it, mine shuts down the usb bus if it senses a high current flow.

Make sure your stand offs are nylon and that no part of the flight controller is in contact with the frame or any other conductive components. A carbon frame is usually always grounded because itís in contact with the ground on the sma connector for your video antenna, so any contact with a positive source will result in problems. Itís worth sorting particularly if itís through the flight controller as it could cause some random weird behaviour.

The quad is a skystars 120, everything is very squeezed in and 'tight' the stack just fits in the frame, im wondering if it might be a good idea to cover the top and bottom frame plates with 'sticky back plastic' as blue peter used to call it, the stuff kids cover books with to stop the chance of grounding?
