Mini Talon
« on: September 28, 2018, 09:55:09 PM »

Aye up.
Nothing ground breaking here .I bet most of you you have owned the Talon in one of it's incarnations.
Fixed wings are new to me, so any advice and criticism is more than welcome.

SunnySky 1200kv ,50A ESC,9g metal servo's.Matesky 405 wing FC,Flystrobe nav lights (nose and tail)Mistra FPV cam,Fire Fly for video rec(home bodges pan & tilt mech),TS832VTX,7 series GPS.
Well that's the mix of parts chosen mostley for cheapness or what was on offer on Bangood.
After some expensive multi crashes and the loss of my S800 wing.Inclination and  hobby funds were low.
So this build has been a slow one.
But the gaps between orders arriving has made me explore the cosmetic side of things. And poverty is the mother of invention. :D
The shape is based on the Reaper drone and having some primer in the shed made the choice of colour grey.

The servo's I had spare are deeper than the cutouts on the foam but nothing a Stanley couldn't fix.
My first attempt at film wrapping went ok with a standard clothes iron. But one question for you experienced builders.Does solar film do much for crash resistance? I was expecting a thicker film before it arrived but every little helps as the nsuper market says perhaps?
Another insurance policy was adding a cover of carbon cloth to the nose and tail section. These are weak spots I'm led to believe.I do worry the carbon will restrict tx and vtx signals at some angles. But being a rubbish flyer I have gone for the option of coping with my robust landings :+
Another new area for me was utilizing the spare servo channels on the F405 wing for a pan n tilt mech.A couple of resistors and a gear end pin removal to increase the traverse of the 90 degree servo. Some araldite and spare plastic were used for the pan n tilt camera frame.

To be honest I can't see this surviving many of my landings.
The RX system was going to be the 2.4gh FrSky long range.
This was discarded when the 35 UHF giveaway happened. So now I have the R9Mmini installed.I know size isn't everything(Iv'e told the wife that for years). But it just doesn't fill me with confidence.I may well stick the R9mini in my 250 Tri copter and go for the R9slim+ for peace of mind.
So now it's sat in my shed as I ponder the new world of UHF.Maybe waiting for flex 1w OpenTx s/w or sticking too 500mw E.U .
I'm not rushing as the price of 4-5k mah batts has made my eyes water :o.
With this being only my second foray into things with less than 3 motors,my first UHF system. The continuing development of OenTx UHF s/w.
I keep putting off miadiening the bugger with an old 3.6mah 3 I have spare.
Should I wait of breakwind in face of past disasters and fly it.Or  keep checking and double checking all settings get a new battery. And do some SIM time.
This is the only time I've been nervous of a new build. But there is no fun or challenge in knocking up a 250 quad any more.
I'll post my triumph or disaster and treat those two impostors both the same >
Any hint's advice more than welcome.
Cheers.

Nice - that looks the dogs danglies in grey :D

I wouldn't bother flying this on 3s ... I mean, it'll fly, but it really needs 4s to fly properly if you see what I mean. Although what prop are you using on that motor? I use a SS 1400v motor on a 8x6 prop and it flies brilliantly.

The grey is nice but it did need the black to stand out in the usual grey skys we get.
The motor is a 1250.I have two prop choices to try.9.45 and 8.6.
I was thinking of trying the 9 first.

If this is the Mini Talon, then an 8 inch prop sounds right...although if you have to use 3S then the 9 inch may be better...As for the R9M Combo, I would stick to 2.4G, at least until its test flown.
If you have a 5.8g video link, this will be your limiting factor anyway....BTW....898mhz..is not  legal in the UK either, although I have an R9M on order too.....459mhz IS legal for UK use.

Somehow I missed his thread, yeah I would stick with 2.4Ghz just for the time being until this R9 mess is sorted out.

The plane looks really good with the paint scheme, I do like that :) I would also tend to go 4S especially for the take off, on 3S it's got a lot less thrust.

Yep i have been following the FB group on the FRSky UHF system. It appears to be a mix of F/W and user error causing misunderstandings.Being prone too both I will hang fire for now.No rush too maiden it as yet .No batt purchased yet .And as I posted in your build thread , el cheapo foam board test mule has the R9 mini fitted now.Going too keep it L.O.S and fly it at toy grade distances.
