Test of new Frsky Super 8 Antenna for R9M
« on: October 08, 2018, 06:58:45 PM »

Here's a quick back to back comparison of stock vs Super 8 antennas with the X-Lite R9M lite module.

Not much difference. Possibly it seems better at the 700m-1Km range, which is probably more suitable for quads. But after that  there doesn't seem to be much in it.  Certainly nothing that says yes this is way better.

Im waiting for my (JR Module) Combo to arrive....1,75kms...?.....That's nothing in terms of distance...?...RSSI down at 40%?...That's terrible?

My XM Plus on 2.4G can put that to shame.

The Lite TX Module is limited to only 100 mw output, but even so on this frequency I would expect considerably more range than this. unless its stuck on 25mw??.

The full size JR Module is capable of adaptive RF output up to 1 watt, which is a huge amount on this frequency.

I would check your antenna tune matches the frequency you are trying to use....EU.....or.....FCC..??

EU is 868mhz.....FCC is 915mhz....but 915mhz is Mobile Phone territory in the UK, so I would stay away from that one.

Tryed my stock r9 on Sunday. On 25mw I managed to failsafe at 1.1km. But I put  that down to poor antenna placement. Practically the whole antenna was hidden by carbon fibre with the angle I was traveling.

I've gone 2.2Kms with no failsafe with the Lite outputting at 100mw.  I would ignore actual RSSI values in the video - just look at relative values between the flights,  my RSSI is currently under reading.

So today, I went and did a back to back with one of my quads.  The super-8 is definitely much better at shorter ranges.  See attached image (no video for this).

What should the orietation of this antenna be, according to my multimeter one side is connected to the screen and the other the core. That makes me think vertical with the screen side down.

I'm not entirely sure if orientation makes a difference.  During my vid whilst in the hold I did rotate my TX so the antenna was vertical, but it appeared to make bugger all difference.  :-\

As a distance flier when you are 10k out it might make enough of a difference to be important.

Interesting findings, good to see in relative short range you can orientate your antenna to suit your own taste and it has little if any detrimental effect.
