Winter Beater
« on: November 28, 2018, 06:32:43 PM »

Back in the day it didn't matter what the weather was like, I was flying pretty much daily because I knew the plane would just work and I wouldn't come home feeling a little chewed off if something hadn't quite gone to plan (autopilot etc), and the plane which I enjoyed flying the most was my Bixler. Well, it was my AXN actually, but I had a lot of fun with the Bixler too.

Then I got to thinking well.. why not just set it up again and have it as a "don't really give a monkeys" thing and have some fun with it. I discovered I had a spare VTX, camera, motor, esc, servos ... why not.

So here's to a "winter beater" project. No autopilot, no OSD, just solid components, a clean installation and hopefully as little faff as possible.

Spec:
Bixler 1.1
MG90s servos all round
FrSky D8RII+ receiver (2.4GHz)
5.8GHz 200mw Eachine TX526 VTX with a Spironet antenna
Some random Sony HAD II WDR camera with a 2.8mm lens
40A Hobbyking ESC i had kicking around
2250kv Turnigy motor
6x4.5 prop
Lost model alarm (which actually works with my radio now so I can turn it off).

It should have decent range to be honest and since it's got a D8RII+ receiver in it, I get telemetry back to the radio with the associated "beeps" warning me when its going out of range.

I have mechanically secured a GoPro mount on the nose with a nylon bolt from the underside, then reinforced it with glue so it has zero movement - this will either hold a Firefly 7s or a Mobius, depending on the battery I use - which will either be 3s 5000mAh or 3s 2200mAh.

So what's so exciting about this then? Absolutely nothing. Except for the fact that it feels good to finally revisit the days before things got too complicated and it became more about the setup than the flying.

Roll on the snow!

p.s. anyone got a spare canopy? :P

Hehehe ! I like it and not a bad idea at all. W8th all the fancy nonsense you can pile into these planes no2 it makes perfect sense to have just a good old no thrills ch8ck around :)

Hee hee Steve, looks just like my old Easystar - battered, moth eaten and bits held on the boom with tape.
Scruffy old thing's had hundreds of flights, and the worst damage it ever had was when I fell down the stairs and landed on it  :P

You say it's an old beater, but that's less gaffer tape than one of your new builds isn't it :-P

You'll have a blast, just chuck it up and don't think about it

:o the claws are out lol ... she's a beautiful lady.

I may not have mentioned that the spar is past its best so she may turn into a clapping lady if I pull up too hard. I should probably fix that :D

Just slap a bit of gaffer tape from one wingtip to the other under the fus. That will do nicely sir

Yea your gaffa tape suggestion, it will work it just won't be pretty - the spar is intact, it just feels very bendy - maybe I'm just not used to it being like that any more lol

Hee hee my Easy-star spar isn't super stiff, but I wouldn't call it bendy.. It's white, so prolly glass not carbon tube.
Gaffer tape solution has many benefits...
It looks cool...
It's easily replaced...
It might add lift...
It will collect small insects during the flight...
It will flap about and make an interesting sound!!

Compelling reasoning to go ahead with it :)

We should have a thread for 'the scruffiest POS plane that does the most epic flight'.......
Here's my offering...
Yeti wings Yeti, 3700 4S, Overlander 2836 motor, 9x6 prop, Dragonlink, RMRC 1280, EZOSD, no flight controller.
Plus a little bit of coloured 'Steve-tape' LOL.

I remember using packing tape once, it worked great until it all blew off in the wind and one of the ailerons detached :D

I also had a load on my X5 and I kept hearing a buzzing while it flew by - couldn't figure out what it was until I realised it was tape "lifting" and flapping at high frequency in the wind :D
