FlyBot Flux build thread
« on: December 04, 2018, 09:19:41 PM »

I've just got hold of a Flux wing, so here's a build thread.  I've not done anything as I write this, but thought I'd grab some photos whilst I was checking out the box contents so I could record it somewhere while I go.

This is the Flux wing https://flybot.de/en/flux-fpv-freestyle-wing it's similar in the design concept to the MiniRaceWing that I flew before.  The big difference in these over regular wings is that the main fuse is made from 2 carbon plates with risers - almost exactly like a quad frame. But it goes a little further in how the wings are held on - they use these plates that will allow the wings to pop off in a crash making it quite difficult to actually damage.

I know this because I have thrown the MiniRaceWing into the ground about 20 times.  For me, it was somewhat of a pain to launch - it needs a proper throw, not my usual hold-onto-one-wing-and-toss-it malarky.  The Flux is supposed to be easier to handle and launch - we'll see !

So I've just taken the kits out of the box and so laid out the contents to get some snaps - here are the wings and winglets, with apologies for the picture.  I can either get not enough light onto this, or the wings reflect all the light and look odd

The next picture is of everything else in the box (except for the decal sheet as I forgot that - but y'know, decals - you've seen them before) here we have the elevons the frame parts, motor mount, push rods etc etc

As to what I'm going to put in there, to save time and money I'm probably going to raid the MiniRaceWing and steal it's power setup (T-Motor F80  2500kv, 60A Skywalker ESC and a Graupner 5.5x5.5 speed prop), and maybe the camera/VTX - not sure yet.  What I don't have right now is any decent metal geared servos, so I've got a few on order from Banggood.

There's quite a nice PDF manual available here https://flybot.de/media/pdf/15/08/a7/FLUX_Manual_EN.pdf if you want to see what I'm going to do next.  For starters I'll glue in the wing spars ready and put the frame part togather just so I can have a look at it.

Interesting concept as is the MiniRaceWing which I can't remember seeing many video's from it though, did you not get the time on it or did it fall short of expectations ? How do you think this one will surpass it ?

Interesting concept as is the MiniRaceWing which I can't remember seeing many video's from it though, did you not get the time on it or did it fall short of expectations ? How do you think this one will surpass it ?

I Did a bunch of flights on it at a meet where very disappointingly, my HD camera recording 4 seconds instead of the 40 minutes of flying, so I didn't post up much, and aside from that I'd got caught up in lots of other stuff.  The plan was always to go back and get the hang of throwing it, but I do have lots of stuff that I always have on the to-do list and I don't get very far down that list mostly because of new things appearing.

I've just glued the spars in and put the central fuse part together, so ther'es a few differences that can be seen.  The wing in the new Flux is slightly thicker - so perhaps that will generate a bit more list and make it easier to launch.  The fuse it structured really very differently indeed... hold on, I'm going to take a few pics

What you can see in that picture is the MRW Fuse top, and the FLux fuse below.  The MRW is very low profile and opens out at the camera section.  It's motor mount was adjustable so you could adjust how far the carbon tube went into get your CG where you wanted it.

So the Flux loses that flexibility, but what we get instead is more space inside the fuse section, and a simple motor mount at the rear.  There are a lot more pre-drilled holes that let you mount full sized/micro cameras, regular flight controller stacks, or micro ones.  Basically there is more space - which is good for me as I am not the cleanest builder !

Here's a picture of the carbon spars glued in.  It's the two that protrude out that break away in a crash. (you can see the bits they connect into just underneath the main fuse part.

...and finally here's a pic comparing the wing profiles of the Flux (bottom) and the MRW (top) You can see how the Flux's wing is more substantial.  They both have the same mountings though, so I would fly either models with either wings !

Since the glue was dry, I quickly attached the wings and put the winglets on so I could have a quick comparison to the MRW.  I like the curve of the Flux :)

I decided to order a new ESC for the Flux, as the MRW already has a bunch of wiring coming off and I do want to keep flying that one.  I shall probably still borrow the motor from it, but I've got a spare flight controller, VTX & camera so the rest is sorted.  What do you guys think about me trying an R9MM in there?

Great comparison shots CK, thanks for posting!

Remarkably similar in wing design.

Are the carbon spars the same distance apart between the 2 models by any chance Wayne? I'm wondering as it would be great to be able to get a set of flux wings to go with my MiniRaceWing fuz!

They are indeed - the wings would be totally swappable

Great news thanks Wayne, I'll have to see if I can get hold of a set of spare wings then...

If you have problems starting, try half throttle. That's enough to get it going and it won't torque. Also try to throw level, not upwards.
I fly a Flux too, its a bit calmer to fly as the MiniRaceWing and i like the bigger electronics bay, much easier installation.

If I had a pound for every FPVer moaning about some plane or other being difficult to launch and then you see them throwing them up at 45 degrees into an immediate stall then I'd probably have six or seven pounds by now!

"throwing" is very questionable half the time too ... Mr Burns would be proud.
