A couple of FliteTest foam numbers
« on: December 23, 2018, 11:07:42 PM »

After moving from quads too a Reptile S800 which I lost after around 2hours of flight.
I decided to keep the mini Talon in the hanger for now discretion being the better part of valour and all that.
So a few cheap FPV option with no F/C just to hone my flying skills(my lack of unaided flight time was a factor in the loss of the s800 wing)was the brief for my new bird.
A spare 2204 motor and a couple of spare servo's were in my parts bin so a Flitetest wing was in my mind.
I pass Steve Webb models in Cheshire now and then so I called in and purchased 4 sheets of branded FT foam board for a tenner.
I did have the intention of building the FT Versa Wing.
But then the Goblin caught my eye.Based on the Strix nano Goblin.

Takes two foam sheet too build so only a fiver, takes a 2204 or similar motor and runs on the batts all 250 quad flyers have all ready.
All the plans are tile on PDF format so no worries if you can't find a friend with an office that has a  plotter.
Lots of printing and selotape and cutting then using spray adheasive too mount the cut templates.

You can find the plan download and build video on the  FT forum.

https://forum.flitetest.com/index.php?resources/ft-goblin-plans.24/

My first build and I can be a little cack handed but easy enough with a pack of pound shop stanley type blades(branded ones don't appear to last any longer than cheap ones).I was surprised how quickly foam can blunt a blade.
A tin of primer I had spare and some selotape for a poormans Monokote.

The combination of poor weather, work and me not being in the pub when the previous two criteria are met have meant no maiden as yet.
But the foul December weather and the surprising results from my first foam build have got me on another.
A little more complex this build, but a good example of what can be achieved from a slab of foam.
To improve my flying skills a bit of rudder and elevator in the mix.(should be fun)

If you have't done a foam build from plan before Id say give it go.A printer glue gun and blades and most folk could manage it.

Not really and FPV platform but there are a few FT planes that look good little mules.

I will maiden the bugger and post a vid hopefully when the weather improves.
Those that have flown it say it's a good little plane. And only takes a couple of evenings too build. And for me probably a couple of flights to destroy.

As a Laser cut kit of parts, these things are very easy to build.

Biggest problem for most of us in the UK is getting hold of genuine USA Foam Board...because it's definitely not all the same.

I suppose the shipping/ Duty cost of these kits from the States would prove to be inhibitive.....Maybe that will change after Brexit..?

He said in his post that he popped by Steve Webb models to pick up the FT foam board so I presume you can order online too.

If you were to agree the cost of posting these Boards Steve, imagine the state of them by the time they arrive...?...lol

Yeah I imagine packing the boards adequately would only make large orders worth while. It would require a sturdy box too prevent corner damage.
Just had a quick glance at https://www.servoshop.co.uk .He ships minimum 5 sheets of depron so I imagine the same applies for FT branded board.

Model shop Leeds stock the FliteTest foam board and some of the kits.

I have downloaded lots of the free FliteTest tiled plans and built quite a few of there models using UK type foam board purchased from my local Hobycraft store. Although a little heavier and more difficult to remove the paper for some parts all my planes fly extremely well. 4 sheets cost 10

I think im going to build one of those Nano Strix's, I was thinking about gettning a Dart XL but I think I'll be just as happy with a scratch build.
