Which free 3D cad package?
« on: December 27, 2018, 02:33:25 PM »

So just started in 3d printing  ;)
I tried a couple of free ones like FreeCAD  and openSCAD but wondering if there are better free ones?

Just checked and Fusion 360 is free unless you make more than $100,000 with the software!!!

I started with Tinkercad but soon outgrew it. For the last year or so I have been using Fusion 360. It's free to hobbyists. It is a fantastic programme. It has a steep learning curve but there are plenty of great tutorials on Youtube.

I've been using Autodesk 123D design which seems ok and there are lots of tutorials on youtube.  I haven't seen Fusion 360 so I'll have a look at that as well.

I use Autodesk 123D design and get on with it fairly well, it's not fantastic but it is free.

I think Autodesk 123D design isn't available any more. It was replaced by Fusion 360 I think.

I know they stopped future support and then cut access to everyone's cloud based projects which went down like a lead balloon !

Well if you're still looking,  I'd recommend FreeCAD.  I've been going through the video tutorials here:

https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC_9HwDkwxllq5lFGkYBIH9g

It's quite powerful compared to industry standard packages.  I'm licensed for the full version of Siemens NX at work which is an industry standard very expensive 3D package.  FreeCAD compares well to that for most of what you would want to do and will export in most formats that you will need eg: STL, STP,IGES, G-Code

Cheers, been playing with openSCAD for some stuff as it seems to suit me quite well as I do a fair bit of coding. I did have a play with FreeCAD and I didn't get on with it very well. I guess it's a steep learning curve. I may do some more work on FreeCAD as it might be easier than OpenSCAD at screw threads.
Cheers

I've tried fusion 360. Or should I say I've tried to try it.. Can't get it to run. I think because it's online and my tinternet connection is not good.

Can you get an offline version??

Another free tutorial from the University of Warwick for absolute beginners.
Written and video tutorials linked together.
For me this as shown me more in 3 exercises than hours of you tube viewing. It has been written for teachers for secondary school tech pupils(about my level).
