All ImmersionRC equipments
« on: January 19, 2019, 11:52:42 PM »

Range test with all ImmersionRc equipments in 5.8gHz.
I use a groundstation with Duo5800 5.8GHz A/V Diversity Receiver,
Patch Antenna, SpiroNET Antennas and on a multirotor 600mW vTx with SpiroNET Antenna.

What do you think of the almost sudden signal drop at 1200m?

Some advice ...

First off, 5.8G is very hit and miss as a reliable video frequency anyway. Add a carbon framed Copter into the mix and it doesn't help either.
Circular Polarised antennas suffer a dbi loss against linear ones to. Everything about 5.8G is super critical, the antennas, VTX channel tuning, atmospheric humidity, fresnel zone, everything. If you had to choose the worst Video frequency for long range FPV, 5.8G would be it.

Thats said, at 1200 mtrs out, 35 metres altitude is too low for 5.8G Video, even though you are over flat land. If you were on 1.2G Video, it would not be a problem at that height.  This is why range flying on 5.8G is nearly always done on the edge of space...lol.
Next time out, try it a bit higher, you might get further out then. You will be surprised only a small change in altitude can make a big difference. The return leg had a much cleaner signal, check your VTX antenna is not being blocked in some way.

yep, good rule of thumb is 100m up for every 1km out

Thank you very much for the very useful answer.
More expensive antennas could improve?

Not necessarily so, it depends on what type of flying you are doing. Straight out and back you could use something with a narrow beam. For more acrobatic flying its best to use antenna with a more rounded beam. Back in the early days I could get 3k out of standard immesion kit with clover leaf on the model and goggles. But as has been said to do that I had to be at altitudes so there was a clear line of sight between the tx and Rx. You could try putting the antenna below the quad. We did this by using a self powered electric retract. Extending the antenna once the quad was in the air.

Ian did some useful videos on the subject https://www.fpvhub.com/index.php/topic,9299.0.html

Since the original Topic is Immersion RC ...I thought it worth mentioning that Bangood have their famous 600mw vtx on sale now for a mere 8.50p

A bit of a steal considering how much they used to be, and a clean 5vdc output for your camera...
