Model train with posible Runcam help.
« on: March 03, 2019, 03:13:37 PM »

Hi, completely new to this, but hoping to get some help. I have what you could call a high-level model train set that runs around my house on a shelf around 6'6" off the ground through 3 rooms."It was the only easy way for a permanent set up" Now, i would like to fit 4 small cameras to the trains/carriages that i could view on, let's say a 16" monitor all at once or 1 larger picture individually. The cameras i was hoping to use was possibly the Runcam eagle or very similar due to their size. Now presumably i need 4 cameras, 4 transmitters that have at least 4 channels & a 4 channel receiver.  Now can i get a receiver that will have some sort of control of what i see on a monitor? IE: screen spits into 4 or just 1. as I don't want to use headsets or the tiny 7" screens. Or would i be better trying to do this via wifi or something? Open to any suggestions as nothing has been purchased as yet.

Thanks.

Yes you could adjust the receiver channel to flick between the transmitters and it'll only show that channel on the TV.

4 transmitters in such close proximity sounds like you would get a lot of interference. Some diversity receivers can be configured to receive on 2 different channels, but it would probably be easier with 4 individuals if the interference is bareable. 4 pictures in one, probably best done with a security camera doo-dah.

4 transmitters so close wont work well. But a solution would be to effectively feed all 4 cameras into a unit to output them all on a single cable (quarter screen each) then transmit them to a single receiver and display that on what ever monitor you want. The output is normally composite video which via an adapter can go to your tv as a scart or composite in. You will lose resolution as each camera will only be effectively outputting a quarter of the standard resolution.

OK so now the difficult bit, getting a very small unit to put 4 camera inputs into 1 output signal (sort of quarter screen each) like you would on a cctv system.

I will see if I can find something......

Why not use a rc camera switch, then one transmitter, flick between up to 4  cameras ?

The thing that combines 4 video cameras into one picture is called a 'quad video processor'. I can't seem to find a small one or a cheap one they seem to start at about £50 and go up. I am sure Banggood used to do a small 4 channel car dvr with a video out which would work but I cant seem to find it anymore.

Think about it though - 4 separate trains - you need 4 separate transmitters, unless you plan on dragging a wire behind each loco.

As far as I can tell you'd need 4 txs on 1, 3, 5, 7 (or bonus points for different bands) and then just use a single Rx to switch between those channels depending on which loco you wanted to see the view from.

Thanks for the input everyone. I'm getting the impression i should be going down the possible wifi CCTV route with this, but would still like to use the small lightweight Run cam type of cameras. I am not quite sure on this part, but i noticed that they do a smaller range of tiny 2.4G video transmitters that have a good transmission range & wasn't sure if this would hook up with my home wifi being on the same frequency, as it may be easier to use the house wifi & security CCTV software.

No they won’t join your home WiFi network. The video signal is analog for starters.

Do you want all the cameras on the same train or not?
