Any opinoins on which OSD/stabilazation to use?
« on: May 31, 2012, 08:21:23 PM »

Hi Guys

I've been reading quite furiously of late along with ordering several items to fit into my new Skywalker. I'm at a point where i've read so many conflicting information about which is the better osd and flight stabiliser to use. What I am considering are the EzOsd, Eagletree OSD pro and Hornet OSD. I've heard many different things about each. I'm after something which has decent information displayed but I also want something with low RFI.

Regarding the stabilization I see that many here use the FY-31, I kinda like the looks of it but my decision will ultimately be based on what I partner it with.

If any of you have good experience with an OSD/stabilisation system that would suit a skywalker then I would appreciate your comments.

FY117 with FY21AP works great, Hornet and FY31AP works for me but early days. No idea on Eagletree I don`t use it. EZOSD is only good for an OSD, it has no stabilization, nor unlike the previously listed can display your AP`s state on screen

Thanks Coyote, all the information you give I find invaluble and appreciate it. Currently I'm planning my Skywalker build with many of the 'improvements' youv'e done with your previous build logs. Looking forward to a cracking first crash, errr I mean flight!

I also take note of one of your comments about coastguard radar. There's one near where I was thinking of doing my maiden but will give it a miss now...Thanks again for the advice

Hi Dan,

I first kitted my skywalker out with the EZOSD - I liked the clear concise information that it provided.  However, for the last couple of weeks I have been running the FY31 and Hornet.  The RTL, ACM and Nav mode are awesome and work really well.  The only thing I don't like about the hornet is the overcrowded OSD display.  This can be changed, but it is still not as clear as the EZOSD.

If I was to choose again though (knowing that I have 800 of equipment in the air), I would go for the FY31/Hornet solution.

Cheers,

Tim

I like the display of ezosd, especially the very clear home arrow. A good general osd.

My osd is Eagletree, think its very good, but pricey, lots of extra sensors available (at extra cost) Particularly like RTL and antenna Tracking. Its quite integral to the rc system (Not easy to swap around between planes)

Oh yea stabilisation available too, again at more cost, that's probably the only drawback of that system.

hope that helps you decide...

Well I've decidied to go down the eagletree route on this one, got the elogger, osd pro, gps and guardian onits way now.. Seemed like the best way to get everything integrated in a single system. Hopefully it'll work out. Will let you know.

Thanks for the advice and opinions

Yeah I am planning on using a diversity setup with tracking as well, but not gonna go for that till I've got a couple of flights under my belt, get the plane setup and used to the goggles. I've also gone for the baro and airspeed sensor too, seemed like a no brainer really. I like the idea of the temp sensor under the ESC so might include that before I seal everything up.

I've already been reading through the manuals that I downloaded from Eagletree, as  you say there is a lot in there but I am getting my head around it and understand the basics, just need the unit now so I can have a good play.  I've got a couple more bits I'm waiting on now but should have everything to start my build by the end of this week so will let you know how I go  :)

I go for a dual safety measure. I use the EZOSD for its simple no clutter HUD and its location details are constantly recorded on the iPhone.
I also have the FY-31ap installed with the RTH enabled on failsafe.

The other day it was a little windier than I thought and my lipo was old, anyway the FY31ap couldn't bring it home because the battery was too low, but because of the EZOSD I found it 2KM away using the FPV app on my iPhone.

There's allot of info to take onboard with the manuals, so if you get bogged down I'll help you out with setup related stuff. I have the airspeed and altitude sensors aswell so I have true airspeed over GPS and the barometer altitude is allot more accurate than the GPS (as GPS can be very inaccurate depending if the SATS are over head or low on the horizon)  Are you looking to have diversity and antenna tracking down the line?  There is the Eagleeyes for that.  I upped a few settings on the OSD pro for RTH to work well as I found it didnt circle well against a wind.  I can forward you my config file at some point when you are ready or just post the settings I used.  Because each setup varies so much even with the same plane you may not need to tweak anything at all.  Oh I also have the brushless RPM sensor which is nothing more than a cool addition and I have the temp sensor which I have slipped under the heatshrink of my ESC to monitor if it gets too hot.

I'd be very interested to see your config file.

I use all  Eagletree gear  including Eagle eyes, OSD Pro, eLogger V4,  GPS, altitude/airspeed sensors  and guardian,  but I've only recently started to fully install everything  (I just haven't had time to set up RTH properly yet  although everything has been installed and appears to be working). I would like to see what your set  up is like and maybe some additional  set  up tips specifically for RTH  would be helpful.

Cheers,

Well i've got the power supply side of my build sorted and installed now, today I started on the rest of the kit, osd and guardian etc. I'm hoping to finish it tommorrow so I can give it a ground test and make sure everything is working as it should be (really hope it does). If all ok I'm gonna try for my first flight next weekend but will be LOS initially till I get used to the flight characteristics of the plane. For RTH etc i'l give it a go with the defaults but if I need to change anything I'll post the file here.

I have used a full suite of Eagle Tree electronics on my EasySyar and Skywalker for about two years. The key to RTH is getting good stabilisation. The guardian is excellent and delivers reliable RTH every time. I first used an optical stabilisation - total crap, then tried a FY20 which was good most of the time but occasionally would send the plane into a spiral dive.

On the RTH settings, I started with default settings on my Skywalker but soon increased the turn proportional gain and limit by about 50% to get sharper turns and a smaller home radius. I have recently increased the pitch proportional gain so that the plane reaches the desired altitude a bit quicker.

If you have any problems setting it up then I am glad to help if I can.

Dan,

Ow are you getting on with the eagletree stuff?
I am in the same situation as you were. I cant decide which osd and autopily model to go for.
I guess you have your system up and running?
Look forward to hearing more if you get the chance.
Cheers
