badger's Twinstar build
« on: September 02, 2019, 01:47:56 PM »

so I thought I'd do a build thread as I'm definitely going to need a bit of help with the FC stuff, so here goes:

MPX Twinstar
2x Turnigy D2830-11 1000kV motors
2x Turnigy Plush-32 30A speed controllers
4x Corona 929MG 12g Metal Gear servos
2x Graupner electric 8x5 props CW/CCW
4S 3Ah batteries

Matek F411-wing FC
Beitian BN-880 GPS
FrSky SBUS-capable XR-series Rx

Eachine TX526 VTx
Aomway cloverleaf antenna
mini-size camera TBD
Mobius

plus various other stuff I haven't thought of yet

it's not intended to be anything clever, just something to cruise around with, be a testbed for my first FC build, so 2.4GHz radio, 5.8GHz video, all nice & simple (& legal ;) ).

I've plugged the FC into my computer & calibrated it with the iNav Configurator & it all looks okay.  the micro USB port does look horribly fragile though & I'll probably squidge a bit of epoxy around it the strengthen it - there do seem to be lots of comments on YouTube about people having broken theirs off.  I would ideally like to leave a UART free with MSP enabled, but I don't think there are enough on the FC to be able to do this.

so, wiring, nice & simple again, as per the helpful Matek diagram:

SBUS -> SBUS  (built-in inverter on UART1-Rx)
GPS   -> UART2
SmartPort -> ST1 - this is just for RSSI, right?

this uses all the UARTs & doesn't leave one unused in case I damage the USB, correct?

I've still got a few bits on order - not least the Twinstar - so there will be pictures to follow.  & probably lots more stupid questions  :o

My first FPV plane was twinstar. Absolutely loved it. Been thinking about doing one again so just bought it.

iNav on F405 wing
Frsky R9M and f-port
Sunnysky 2212-1100 with APC 8*5 to start

nice.  :)

mine turned up this morning.  it seems pretty nice, but from a time BC (before carbon), so there's rather less space inside than I was expecting on account of the thickness of the foam.  I think I might get an RX4R/RX6R for it rather than trying to shoehorn in one of my X6R/X8Rs.

I just realized that I'd mixed up SBUS & SmartPort here - RSSI is on SBUS ch16.

I'm not sure why I would want SmartPort connected to the FC & whether it's for sending SmartPort sensor data to the FC or sending FC sensor data to the Rx.

One of the reasons I went to the Frsky R9M. With FrSky Fport only need one wire to get all the telemetry and control. that said, I have never used telemetry for FPV before. Never found the need.

I suggest planning your layout and ry fitting everything before gluing together. Its hard to resist assembling, but it helps a lot to figure out what goes where.

I ended up using same GPS as you and have put it in a 3d case just behind wing. My rx will also go in there. Really happy out it turned out.
For the FX, I hollowed out part of the fuselage so the FC can sit in there and I have full movement of the battery back as far as it needs to go.

Next have to figure out a design for the camera / cockpit area.
For motors I designed some new mounts to suit the Sunnysky 2212. Probably suit yours too. I'm uploading the files to thingiverse if you need some.

I did some googling on SmartPort & understand how it works with a FC a bit better now.  I'm going to fly the TwinStar LOS sometimes, so telemetry is a must for me.  I will investigate FPort for a future model!

I'm definitely going to do a dry run before gluing the fuselage halves together, there's rather more than I'm used to to fit in & I want to make sure it's going to balance somewhat sensibly beforehand.  I'm still waiting on my motors & ESCs before I can do too much.

I was reading Coyote's TS build thread here:

https://www.fpvhub.com/index.php/topic,21201.0.html

which seems to show that the included motor mount might be usable.  I wish I could 3D print stuff, but I don't have a printer.  :(

Nice choice of bird, I would do another one myself they fly so well.

Sure the standard mounts work fine, as do the 3D printed ones.

It is a little tight for space so a lot f trial and error and creativity is required for the dry run stage before committing to glue :)

I soldered up the F411-wing board & was quite pleased with the job I did - & got GPS, SBUS & SmartPort all working nicely.  & then it just died on me :(  now it won't boot & one of the components on the bottom of the board gets finger-burningly hot, which I don't think it did before.

I don't suppose BangGood are going to believe it was a faulty board once you start soldering, so I guess I'm going to have to get another one & try again.  :(

That's a shame, not very confidence building either. I wonder what's caused it  :'(

well, I say "just died", but I did try plugging in a servo & it went crazy.  when I checked I was getting Vbatt (3S) on the servo 5V pins - all the other 5V pins were 5V & the VTx Vbatt pin was Vbatt, so I'm fairly confident that it wasn't anything dodgy on my part.  I rather doubt I'd persuade BangGood of that, although I might give it a go.  :(

I've ordered another F411 & I have an F405 already, so next time I'm going to configure it via USB & just solder on a battery plug, then go over all the pin holes with a multimeter before doing any more soldering.

on the upside, my soldering has improved a lot & I can now make servo leads.  ;)
