NATS launches online drone hobbyist training course
« on: October 15, 2019, 04:36:12 PM »

The opening page is what you might call basic but click and go.

My main criticism would be that whilst the video states that it applies to all SUA the one shown is a DJI Phantom. I have no doubt that some people will interpret this as "I don't fly drones".

I didn't realise blind people were allowed to fly dji quads!!!!! I always thought line of sight was mandatory!  ;)
Also I thought they were phasing out the word 'drone' and using SUA?

I do hope this isn't the final version as it needs a little more instruction, like do you watch the little cartoon clips or just press next. just realised I  didn't have sound on so that may be why I am missing something?

Cheers for posting.

I agree with you electrotor ... it is very "quadcopter"-centric. People who fly fixed-wing could easily infer that it does not apply to them because they're never actually mentioned nor illustrated.

I wonder how many people, if they had a Skywalker placed in front of them, would consider it a "drone" if asked?

Big fat missed opportunity. They could have just included a few shots of cartoony  fixed wing, job done. Also no mention of associations, club fields, insurance, free flight, gliders.

Itís actually very similar in style and content to the French system I completed last week.

My enquiry to NATS :

Having just watched your new "Drone Hobbyist Online Training" video I would like to ask why you depicted drones or small unmanned aircraft (SUA) throughout the video as quadcopters, in particular the DJI Phantom. Surely this was a perfect opportunity to get over the point that SUA encompasses fixed wing and rotary wing as well as multirotor. The very predictable reaction will be "I don't fly drones so the legislation does not apply to me". You have powerfully reinforced this common misunderstanding  throughout the video by only depicting an SUA as a quadcopter. In addition, if flight safety was your main concern, you again missed an opportunity to direct "drone" users to established model flying associations which offer years of experience and real hands-on flight training which goes far, far beyond the purely theory based online test being proposed by the CAA. The video is not bad but is sadly misleading and misses opportunities to address a significant element of flight safety, that being, actually able to fly an SUA rather than simply read a manual and know the theory.

Well said. How easy would it have been to do that. Makes me consider that NATS, CAA and DfT dont talk.
