Repurposing and Charging 18650
« on: October 26, 2019, 12:51:16 PM »

While having a clear out as we are moving (sort off) found 2 very old laptops. I then thought I wonder what batteries they have?? Well they use 18650 lipos - CORRECTION Lithium Polymer (cheers Coyote)   :D  :D  :D
So managed to strip 16 in total out of old battery packs. 8 Samsung 8 Sony.
I currently use them in goggles pack and x-lite S. Plus I may buy a battery holder/ power pack case for them as emergency chargers for phone?

So now I am wondering how to charge them???? OK so I can put them in tx or goggle pack to charge but I'm not sure on their condition. But they seem to be in the 4v area so fingers crossed they will be OKish?

Is it best to use my normal lipo charger and get a few battery holders or is there an advantage of a dedicated 18650 charger?
I'm hoping that my normal lipo charger will be fine as then it's less to transmort when going away.

Any thoughts?

First thought is they are Lithium Ion not Lithium Polymer so get LIPO out of your head especially when thinking of charging or it won't end well lol :)

Most chargers have a LI-ION option on them, they charge at a very slow rate compared to LIPO

I just charge mine sepearte of my RC chargers. Just slot them in and forget about them. There is no need to set anything, its just easier IMO.

A few examples

Cheap as chips so why not but 2 chargers and charge 4 at a time :)
Education and schoolin is good, but FPV is gooder :)

Thanks for that. I hadn't noticed they were Li-ion  :o :o :o OOps that could have been bad.
Those chargers are nice and cheap. Thanks, I will have a look.
