Looking at having a go at a plane????
« on: January 08, 2020, 07:18:31 PM »

OK so thought New Year why not add a challenge?
I have never flown a plane or a wing but they look like they could be fun.
I need to keep sub 250 gms.
So I picked 2 completely different planes, one very much a toy, the other a fpv wing.
Toy: Eachine Mini Mustang P-51D EPP 400mm
Wing: ZOHD Dart250G

Toy comes with batteries, tx etc £53
Wing comes as PNP or full FPV kit from £58 to £93 plus rx and battery

I am guessing the wing would be better as I can use fpv and if I don't like it I still have the fpv bits for the spares box  :D

Which would be better for me to learn with?
OR should I be considering something different, needs to be sub250?
Cheers

If you get the Dart, get the one with the stabiliser in it - I fly mine without, and well - it's a bit of an animal ... I have crashed it a lot lol. I wish I'd spent the extra on the stabiliser.

To be honest, if you're just starting out flying planks then I recommend flying something like a Bixler / Skysurfer first and maybe even flying it LoS first to get to grips with it.

Also worth considering is the Z-84 wing, one of my favourite planes - you might struggle to get it under 250g though. In fact, you won't get it under 250g.

Cheers for the advice.
The 250gms is a bit of a problem as I really don't want to register. I'm not doing anything iffy I just don't trust the gov to keep the list safe. Just look at New Years Honors list!!! Plus I don't want anyone knocking on my door should someone do something stupid and I am the first 'local' person on the list.... Also not found any really big areas to fly yet as I just fly sub 250 quads at moment. So I normally fly at a football field close to home where I have permission but not during school hrs.

So the Dart is OK if it's stabilised. Watching vids looks like it's fairly easy to get cog correct and then tame the gains down a bit to help smooth things out. I guess running on 2S might slow it down a bit, obviously I need to keep a bit of speed to stop stall?

Any tips?
Are there any sims like Velocidrone or FPVFreerider that are worth a go?

Thanks.

I have the original Dart, it's so ridiculously easy to fly, even with the basic stab that it has.  I can sit on the ground and give it a casual lob in my goggles in launch mode and it sails away.  I also get 25 minutes on a 1300mAh 3s lipo, and it folds down for travelling.  Probably my most used plane of last year (although admittedly not a lot of fixed wing flying went on)

As more and more manufacturers take on board the 250 gram exemption, a greater number of sub 250 g models are becoming available.
Keep your eyes open for such new models.
