Advice Wanted on Getting into Telemetry
« on: March 23, 2020, 04:37:22 PM »

For many years all I have used for my collection of fixed wings is a Futaba tx and a plain rx.

I'm considering upgrading my control system and would ask for any recommended exact list of equipment I should buy to achieve:-

1) 2.4 transmitter with model storage, programmable voice warnings + telemetry

2) 6 & 8 channel receivers with telemetry to suit requirements below

3) Telemetry plug in for voltage

4) Telemetry plug in for 'height' - bario ?

PS a) Can 2 telemetry sensors be plugged into a receiver at the same time?
     b) Anyone selling up with this equipment to sell ??

Cheers Guys.

Frsky has all of this stuff. I'd look into getting a X8R module and then finding the relevant sensors.

Taranis transmitter
X8R module
X series receiver (ensure it has telemetry support)

3. the FLVSS plugs into the battery balance lead & gives you per-cell voltages & overall pack voltage, & has a mini OLED showing the voltages:

https://www.t9hobbysport.com/frsky-flvss-lipo-voltage-sensor

MLVSS does the same without the OLED:

https://www.t9hobbysport.com/frsky-mlvss-mini-lipo-smart-port-sensor

the two current sensors give current & overall pack voltage:

https://www.t9hobbysport.com/frsky-fcs-40a-current-sensor
https://www.t9hobbysport.com/frsky-fcs-150a-smartport-current-sensor

4. Variometer (aka 'vario') for height (& rate of change of height):

https://www.t9hobbysport.com/frsky-variometer

the G-RX6/G-RX8 Rx's have built-in varios now too.

PS a) yes, you can daisy-chain as many different FrSky SmartPort sensors as you like
b) no  :D

Just to follow up:

I did study the Frsky products on the T9hobbysport web site. Thanks Badger.
I then emailed them with a 'want' list to ask if I had forgotten anything.

Richard from T9 replied very quickly advising me of some potential problems with my selection -

Why is it that modern RC electronics all have issues or are so damn complicated? Apparently the receiver I had chosen - 6 channel G-RX6 comes without the telem/ S bus connector socket soldered to the printed circuit board! Richard explained that to the average numpty (i.e. me) this requires more than the average soldering skills.
Heaven know what Frsky were thinking when they decided to sell receivers in this state.

To cut a boring story short, I re-jigged my order to include receivers that did not require any soldering & placed an online order at about 2.00 in the afternoon - the goods arrived at my front door at 8:04 am the next day! Impressed - I was!

Thanks again for all the advices.

ah, apologies, I forgot about the G-RX6/8's needing soldering for external sensors - I'm glad T9 were able to help you out.  the G-RX6/8's are really for DLG's & similar where you just want the vario.

what did you get in the end?  I have a RX6R that's going in a Twinstar soon which looks quite nice.

Badger,
Instead of the G-RX6 (with built in vario), I choose instead Rx6R & Rx4R with separate vario's.
