E.T.s Mini Talon Twin motor...
« on: May 24, 2020, 05:28:33 PM »

Mini Talon Twin Motor.

Had a Mini Talon kit BNIB for a while now...(years, it was 30)
Decided to make it as a twin motor, seeing as I also recently bought an Ender 3 Printer. What a machine, and so many free parts on Thingy verse.
The idea is, since it has no motor in the back, that the twin motors are in front of the CG. This ultimately, means that you dont have to put a whacking great Lipo in it to get the CG which makes a lot of sense if you just want a fun model for local flying which is easy to launch and wont chew your hand off if you chuck it.
After some research, turns out the motor nacelles are important with respect to motor thrust-lines. These in the photos are 12mm below wing centre line. This prevents the motors pulling the model into the floor come launch time and also a change in trim when you throttle up, which sounds useful.
Anyway, the Motor Pods were a breeze to print and fit the wing section very closely...added an undercart and overall very pleased with a model that will balance with just a 2200 mah Lipo!!!
You can of course still load it up with a heavier Lipo, as there is ample room to move the Lipo back of course.
Hoping to fly it soon with a little more finishing off...
The motors are using a 4 in one ESC mounted on a heat sink...

Looks great, well done.
I know nothing about model planes but the props look quite small?
Is the undercarriage strengthened by anything or is it just the 2 printed halves?

The props are only 5 inch but I also have some six inch Tri blades....It's surprising how much power they have...More thrust than weight for sure....is plenty.
The under cart is bolted at the hub and simply glued together...I then bind it with pvc tape which adds a lot of strength....It's quite springy too which absorbs landing shocks.
Hoping to fly it soon with a Mobius on it for the maiden, just to see how it flies..then a simple fpv setup...

Looks good. Can't beat the sound of a twin. Hope you can get it on the air soon.

very interesting - I have a MT in the box that I've rather lost enthusiasm for since slicing myself open on a pusher prop last year.  I do love a twin too.  :D

how's the CofG?  seem like a lot up front & not much tail moment to balance it.

Hi, no problems with C of G....quite the opposite in fact...If you read my initial post it explains that aspect.
