Refresh gear
« on: May 30, 2020, 07:28:21 PM »

Time has arrived to refresh my gear.
Iíve always flown fixed wing Fpv and always used Scherrer uhf for the rc, RMRC gear for video and Eagletree Vector for odd.
However time to try something new (not even sure if Thomas Scherrer is making his UHF gear any more.
So into uncharted territory for me. Iím thinking TBS Crossfire, a micro controller and Range Video Eagle 1.3 for the video.
So hereís the daft question- what transmitters will the TBS crossfire fit into?
I donít need anything complicated. Iím used to a traditional tranny with trims switches etc.
Anyone any ideas?

I've always used the Crossfire exernally ( mounted on a JR module ) so couldnt say but if I was to refresh mine, I wouldn't use it with a Taranis again, the buzzing through the speakers really gets on my nerves.

Thanks Coyote. Iíve gone for the TBS Crossfire and I managed to find a new Taranis X9D. This is the older version which has a nimh battery and charger. I wanted this version as I didnít want to be continually pulling the battery connector in and out of the radioís pcb just to charge it.
Iím now thinking about which fight controller to use. Iíve used Eagletree Vectors in the past. Quite complex though. Iíve looked at some fixed wing FCs and they all seem to need soldering pins or wires on to them. The planes I use all have a current draw on through the esc of 40+ amps. All the FCs Iíve seen canít handle that current (unless thereís some external current sensor).

The Vector is certainly capable, the Matek FC boards are very popular if you want a more in depth experiance through iNav or Ardupilot etc.

The MyFlyDream Autopilot is also very good, plug n play, most have an external current sensor though apart from the Matek

Have set most things up now. New Taranis radio transmitter and TBS Crossfire (external module and diversity receiver).
Iím using Eagletree Vector on a traditional fixed wing.
Iíve tried every way I can to set up the throttle trim failsafe for RTH. However in the receiver analysis wizard it still comes back - less than 5% difference between fs and normal throttle setting.
Iíve tried setting up a new model on the Taranis and going through the rx analysis wizard again but no progress.
Any thoughts anyone?

Think I have it sorted. On model set up thereís a trim option that gives the trim travel only at the bottom end. When I set failsafe with this box ticked and then went through the analysis wizard- hey presto - it works. Also solved my servo chatter problem. It was the rough power from the esc. I put a voltage smoother board in series with this power line - no chatter. Iím quite chuffed with myself!
