E.T.s R9M receiver antenna mounting solutions
« on: June 11, 2020, 12:02:52 PM »

Mounting R9M receiver antennas (A constant headache)

On a Quad, its always a headache, add in a 1.2g VTX / GPS and its even worse due to separation issues.
I got myself a cheap Ender 3 Printer when this Corona fiasco kicked off, since then I have been learning the machine, and more recently, a free 3D design package called Design Spark from RS of all places.
Considering its absolutely free, its pretty good and fairly easy to use too.

The people who designed the injection mold of these 900mhz antennas need locking up for a very long time for not including a small tab and mounting holes IMO...

Anyway, here is my custom bracket to mount the R9MM antenna in what I hope is the best orientation and as far away from the VTX as possible. Fortunately, the VTX is only 200mw and thats plenty TBH, but they are getting more difficult to find these days, most have more power and this is undesirable on a Quad. Even the latest offering from Matek pumps out approx 650mw with no option to crank it down..... :shotmyself: :shotmyself: :shotmyself:

Looking forward to seeing how it works out.

With small quads and 3D parts the big question normally is, how well will it fair after a few crashes. Certainly looks pretty sturdy.

  Hi Ian,

Yes, this mount was printed in ordinary PLA at 100% infill. Its certainly strong enough IMO. In fact having made a few parts in PLA now, Im impressed with its strength / weight TBH.
If this part was made in metal for example, it would be a lot of effort and be unnecessarily strong, so its a win win situation IMO. Now I can design basic shapes in 3D, this Ender 3 has proven to be a bit of a bargain at 160.

Back on topic, I intend the next test flight to be made with the new antenna mount and the exact same settings as before (EU / LBT) @ fixed 200mw output for comparison purposes.

R9M TX Module info using ACCST Flex Firmware:

 3 Modes available:

 1) EU / LBT 868mhz Non Flex Mode ................25mw / 200mw / 500mw

 2) 868mhz Flex Mode................................... 10mw / 100mw / 500mw / 1 watt auto.

 3) 915mhz Flex Mode.................................... (Not suitable for use in the UK or Europe)

After the comparison test, I will be re-binding and using Mode 2 as I know it works far better in Flex Mode having used it on a few Fixed Wing setups.

Test Flight 3 coming soon when the weather improves..

                                                                                          :vulture:
