NOOBs first quad... asking for a friend (2020)
« on: June 23, 2020, 10:11:48 PM »

Evening all!

So some back story.  Friend has a phantom 3, bangs on about it on the regular, so naturally I now need something with a remote that doesnt touch the floor.  Was going to go with a Mavic but then I discovered some guy on Facetube looping buildings and slinging it sideways through tiny gaps... HOOKED!

So I started with the radio and the simulator.  Now I think its time to upgrade to something I can neglect the missus with.  So I'm doing the research, tinys and toothpicks, 5inches and all that.  Trouble is I've jumped in too deep too soon and dont know which way is what now.

So I'm asking... I have a taranis x9 lite (mainly because I couldn't wait for the TX16s to come back in stock) and now I'm stuck with D16 receivers.

If anyone could point me in the direction of something simple and not that expensive, thats compatible with said radio.  Would like a DIY kit that way if it breaks I know how to fix it, but open to suggestions.

Thanks all!

Apologies for the long post and if this topic has already been covered.  I did search I promise.

Welcome.
First question is your x-lite ACCESS or ACCST? If it's ACCST then you can use D8 and D16.
If it's ACCESS then you can use D16 or ACCESS but if you buy a FrSky 2.4GHz XJT Lite External Transmitter at about 23 or multi module like this IRangeX IRX4 LITE at about 33 which will allow you to bind to most radio systems.
Some of the micros can be fitted with a D16 or ACCESS receiver, I fitted an XM+ to a Mobula7.

Next thing, a quad, for indoor practice an Emax TinyHawk is a great little quad and you can get a kit with basic goggles for about 130 with a D8 controller (a basic toy one).
Good goggles are not cheap but the Emax kit is OK to see how you like it, flying FPV (First Person View).

If you are OK at soldering then a cheap budget kit could be a Tyro119 which is about 120 for a kit of parts and there are lots of vids on youtube showing how to put it together. Then you need a receiver to match your transmitter (FrSky XM+ or FrSky R-XSR) and some goggles.

Just to let you know looping buildings etc is not easy at all. Also illegal unless you have permission, plus if the quad (inc battery) is over 250gms you need a licence and pass an online test!!! As of 2021 if it has a camera on it then you need a licence!!!

I'm not trying to put you off at all just making sure you understand there are legalities that sometimes are ignored on youtube!!!!

If you spot something you like the look of let us know BEFORE you buy it and we can give you a better idea if it's any good.
Hope that gives you some ideas.

Quick reply! I like this forum.

Off the top of my head I think I get the choice of ACCESS or ACCESS D16.  But I'm currently on nights, so I cant check.

Never even thought of an external Tx, have taken the back plate of and inspected the pins but never even thought of the addition.  Definately look into that!!

I've seen the tyros' but the reviews I've seen have been mixed at best.  Although without the experience would I even be able to tell?! Perhaps not.  I do like the design though.

I have seen some good reviews on the Efight 210 if anyone out there can either vouch or dissuade me from that?!

We shall see.  Pay day isnt till Friday so I still have some time!

Thank you ched.  I'll definately look into the externals, should open a few more doors at least.

The tyros are OK especially for the money. The components aren't great but they are very flyable. It won't have megga powerful motors but that's not a bad thing learning. The camera might not give the best image but when learning you are not worried about going from shadow to bright sun very quickly.
One think when buying a quad is are spare parts available as you will crash and break bits. So if it's using standard parts then you can upgrade as you go.
Reviewers will probably have tested the best of the best and sometimes don't take price into consideration.
Multi modules are good as sometimes you can't get a quad with the rx you want and a multi sorts it.
ACCST and ACCESS can be confusing but if you don't have any kit it doesn't really matter. The current protocol is ACCESS which can do 24 channels and has less latency than the older ACCST which has D8 and D16 modes.
The only real problem with an ACCESS tx is that as it doesn't do D8 (only D16 or ACCESS) it can't bind to the little whoops that only have a ACCST D8 rx. I wish I could explain it better but if you buy a tyro you will need a rx and you just buy say a XM+ and then flash it with the software (FW) that matches your tx.

I couldn't find an Efight 210???? Does it use standard parts or are the bits only for the EFlight 210?

Mate you're a wealth of info!

I ordered the IRX4 lite the other night from banggood.  So that should alleviate some dramas!

It was the Bfight 210.  Apologies for the fat thumbs.

I'm moving more towards just putting a kit together myself and knocking it together.  I'm getting restless and delivery from china ain't really easing that hahaaa.

Thanks again mate!!

Just had a quick look at Bflight 210 - It seems overpriced and maybe a little out of date to me. It's running an F3 processor on flight controller and that is a bit too slow these days. F4 or F7 are so much better, F3 won't run some of the features on BetaFlight.
The other components are not branded so of questionable quality.
Cameras should ideally be Runcam, Foxeer or even Caddx.
ESC BlHeli_S is good BlHeli32 is a little better but I doubt many people would notice the difference.

By all means put your own 'kit' together but I would suggest posting a list of the components you are thinking of so someone can give it a quick check. i.e. motor sizes, speeds, voltage, prop sizes and pitch, esc to control motors are OK, FC etc.....
There are quite a few decent 5" ready to fly quads that are actually cheaper to buy built than as parts to put together yourself! Have a look at youtube people like CurryKitten, Painless360, Josh Bardwell to name but a few. Also https://oscarliang.com/ has lots of good info.

So!  Been a minute.

The Irange IRX4 lite I ordered arrived.  Out of the box it only provided the R9 and D8/16 & LR12 protocols.  Updated the firmware and bootloader on my x9 lite and it gave out a few more but when selecting the 'Multi' mode it say to upgrade.  But to add misery to the situation it wont write the firmware from the taranis' SD card.

Anyone have any idea what bootloader/openTx firmware is compatible with what IRX4 firmware?? Because I am drawing a blank.

On the drone front though I think I'm I'm just gonna go with a Beta75 or the Tinyhawk 2.

Thanks all!!

Did you flash latest OpenTX to tx? I assume you selected external module on tx?
There seem to be a few vids on youtube about the irange so they might help.

Yea all that good stuff.  Still wasnt having any of it.

I assume you can flash older firmware versions or Tx?? Seen a few videos that show the externalTx fully works out the box but with older openTx firmware... who knows.

The bootloader in the multimodule needs to be at a certain level in order to be able to flash from the radio.  You can update it through the USB port - it's more hassle, but it's nothing too bad.  Read more here https://www.multi-module.org/using-the-module/firmware-updates
