What goggles are people using (or have experience with)?
« on: June 28, 2010, 12:25:27 PM »

After a recent black out experience with my vr1400's I was thinking about what other goggles I could get. What's everyone elses preferences and why.
Cheers.

Hey Giles,

I wonder what you mean by "blackout experience"?  Was it a low battery or a cable pulled out or do you think there's a fault somewhere?  If you need my assistance/ for them to go back to the factory for repair just let me know.

You might also like to have a look at the Fatsharks if and when we have a UK FPV meeting?

All the best

Hi there Si, I wrote this on RCG forum:

Had an interesting experience this morning whilst out at one of my favourite spots. THE GOGGLES BLACK SCREENED. I was 657m up and 792m out. However, I only fly in good coditions, and I always set and test the AP at the beginning of every flight. I switched it instantly to RTH and hoped it did as described on the tin. I then continued to trace the problem. The video reception was fine...as the image on my Archos was untouched. No plugs pulled out. The power was still on with the goggles. I switched them off and switched them on...just a black screen. I could tell power was getting to the goggles, due to a lighter kind of black screen when I turned them on. I swapped the video feed for the Archos one, as I was still getting an image with this. Still nothing. Bear in mind that during all of this I can't see or hear my plane. Then following my P&T on my GS I noticed the plane was above me. JESUS...it took me all of my eyesight to locate the dot in the sky that was my plane. I switched off the RTH and dived to base...I got it back.

I kept everything turned on and continued testing...the screen remained black, but with power. Finally, I decided to go one step further than turning the power switch off to the goggles. I removed and replaced the battery(same one)...PERFECT...the goggles worked again. Now, I promise....power was getting to the goggles during this experience. So my questions:
Has this happened to anyone else.
Why did this happen
BTW the goggles are the VR1400's here in the UK, I think they are the same as the EVG920.
Also, believe it or not, I flew straight after this with no problem.

What do you think?

Hi Giles,

Wow - what a story! I'm so glad it ended well!

I have never heard of any problem like this but I will ask the manufacturer if he can think of anything that may have caused it.

My only thought is I wonder if they overheated perhaps?  Do you wear some kind of cover over your head/ goggles?  I'm clutching at straws really because I've never heard of goggles overheating.

I'll let you now what the factory say

All the best

After giving it some thought, and discussing it upon RCG's, I feel it was definitely the video signal lost either in the little power box or at the goggles. It didn't go B&W fuzzy dots as it does when video transmission is lost.

The goggles were hot, so I wonder if it could have been a kind of auto shut down???

BTW I flew straight after for 28mins without problem.

Cheers Si, I'd be interested in any feedback from the manufacturers.

Hi Giles,

I'm told that the maximum operating temperature of the VR1400 goggles is 35 degrees celcius.  In direct sunlight, or under a blanket in direct sunlight, I reckon this temperature could definitely be reached in this good weather. (My girlfriend left her iPod in the sun at the weekend and it was too hot to touch when I tried to move it - definitely over 35 degrees celcius).

I think this is the most likely cause so perhaps some kind of visor that shades the goggles without making them hot is in order.

Thanks goodness the first person to experience this was you with RTH and everything!

All the best

Simon

Sounds like a simple baseball cap could solve this issue then ?

Cheers for that Si. A baseball cap seems like my next FPV acquisition.

Anybody using fat sharks?  I have a new pair and to be honest am not overly impressed.

Newbie to this stuff so have little co compare notes with but the build quality look really poor.  They're not at all comfortable for something that is designed to be worn and at the moment I seem to have a black and white image - which occasionally flashes colour if I jiggle the built in antenna.

I have a screen and that is receiving colour ok.

Just wanted to talk comparisons because these feel really cheap to me.

Ive not tried the fattys yet, but i was under the impression the were supposed to be the bee`s knee`s

I use the VR1400`s and find colour is fine, they just dont stay on your head very well, keep slipping off

I thought they were supposed to be pretty good and the wife let me treat myself and pay some more for a pair - bit of a birthday treat to go for some quality ones so to speak.  I'll try and get to see some others to compare quality but honestly - I think I'd have been better off getting some cheaper ones which seem perfectly good and stick them in a ski mask.

I've been looking around and found these on ebay:-

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/New-80-iTheater-SOAV-VIRTUAL-VIDEO-GLASSES-920A-Blue_W0QQitemZ260601802206QQcategoryZ163826QQcmdZViewItemQQ_trksidZp3286.m7QQ_trkparmsZalgo%3DLVI%26itu%3DUCI%26otn%3D3%26po%3DLVI%26ps%3D63%26clkid%3D6337353472616200122

Has anyone got any experience of these?

Mitch.

Although personally have no experience.

It may be worth asking the seller if they have brightness/contrast adjustment.

I have seen a few posts with people complaining about random E-Bay goggles as these factors are un-adjustable, so they work fine with consoles, DVD players ect, but can be a little dark for FPV
