DJI HD V1 FPV
« on: December 30, 2020, 11:15:17 PM »

Just about to take the pluge and swap out all my analog kit for teh DJI HD stuff. I think it was the development in the hobby I needed to get back into, I wasn't enjoying the rubbish flight image, but now they look like they have changed the game.

How's anyone found them ?

Are the Caddx cameras a good alternative to the DJI ones ?

Hi Coyote.
Like you I have a lot of analogue stuff but would love to get into the DJI stuff.
Keep us posted on how you get on.

I got some new Skyzone OLED goggles about 6 months ago which greatly improved the picture from my old Fatsharks.

What do you think about the Fatshark SharkByte system. Do you think its worth going that route?

4 guys at our club have it.. absolute game changer. I won't buy it because it will obsolete about 2-3k's worth of analogue gear..tracker, goggles, vtx's antennas etc. But, my clubmates fly out 2-3km with perfect picture even close to the ground. It works perfectly. Caddix is much lighter, picture is great from all of it apart from the lightweight camera option, apparently that's a bit crap. But my mtes could see my Spitfire camera turning round to look at them.. they can also tell their AR wings apart from the patterns/colours when in flight, when I am mistaking puddles and birds for them lol. I will dive in on the V2 when it has an HDMI output and OSD/FC. One thing to note is that the goggles are bidirectional, and chuck out some serious RF which messes with my 1.3 video rx for some reason. Recorded video is not as good as Gopro.

Thanks Rupert, very good info ! I didn't realise the 1.3 interference was a thing, that's noted.

The SharkByte system just seems to be lacking imo compared to the DJI unit to me Drone. Its analgue which for me falls way short of expectations.

Now there's a hack to connect mavlink to them its the clear winner.

But yes, waiting for the V2's might be the smarter thing to do. I think I am going to wait for the V2's to be honest.

I'm hoping for 2 changes :

1) HDMI output - Its a must reallyfor an external monitor and/or recorder

2) Recording of the OSD, whats the point of having GPS coordinates displayed if they arnt recorded in case of a downed plane, crazy not to have it.

Well the videos are popping up on the V2 features.

Slightly higher screen resolution ( but no OLED )

144hz refresh rate I don't need it so it isn't a carrot.

No hdmi output !  ☹

No mention of the OSD being recorded now

Works up to 6S - Not interested

Being able to link my phone to USB so it acts as a spare screen is an option for an external monitor, but only if its a tablet !

Meh, really disappointed to be honest.

The smart move due to the lack of wanted features being offered is to pick up a second hand V1 when certain types are compelled to buy the V2 because of FPV snobbery 😆

What about SharkByte? It has an integrated DVR and is digital - not sure why you think it's analogue?

Quote
Shark Byte is your ticket to HD Whooping goodness!  Rip your winter FPV indoor sessions with the only HD system designed for micro quads.  No need to invest in a whole new set of goggles as the Shark Bytes receiver module works with your existing HDMI ready FPV goggles and the 200m  transmitter and camera weigh in at less than 20g!   With superior clarity, stable color and minimal breakup Shark Byte takes your micro flying to the next level!

Shark Byte delivers near-zero visible latency High Definition 720p 60FPS video on your Fat Shark HDO2, HDO, HD3, and more. This digital HD system supports up to eight operators on standard 5.8GHz FPV frequencies and can be used alongside analog systems without interference.

Fat Shark’s new Shark Byte digital HD receiver is a compact goggle mounted module with integrated DVR and directional antenna.  While mounted, the Fat Shark goggle can be seamlessly switched between digital and analog.   Goggles can be even stored in their case without removing the digital module.

The goggle and module can both be powered by an existing Fat Shark battery (with included balance lead adapter).  For longer flight days, the system includes an XT-60 terminated adapter with a regulator to supply 8.4V to goggles and module from standard 3S or 4S battery packs. Omni antennas are not included.

Ian, if you go for the caddx Nerbula go with the pro version only, pic quality is up there with the dji unit.
None pro nebula is crap really compared to DJI or the pro nebula camera.

SharkByte is terrible imo, I keep saying analog when of course its digital. No idea why, I blame Corvid lol Everytime I see it it just looks like a low res analog system with really bad digital breakup.

Nice tip Martin thanks 👍

I switched to the DJI system a few months ago. In use I absolutely love the system, price-wise not so happy. The 2 things I've changed with the goggles are the foam face plate (swapped it for the other, more squidgy, foam one from DJI) and the head strap (now using a single wide strap).

I've just got a Caddx Nebula Pro camera and it's up there with the DJI camera in terms of image quality. It also costs less and is a few grams lighter which is no bad thing. Also with the Caddx Nebula Pro the co-axial cable is separate from the back plate and so swapping between the 8cm and 12cm cables is more convenient.

Thanks :)

I was looking at options for extending the camera cables and it seems there are no longer options than 12cm, I hope that's only because not many make longer, as opposed to you cant go longer than 12.

20cm cable here  Ian, unmannedtech link.

https://www.unmannedtechshop.co.uk/product/caddx-vista-coaxial-cable/?v=79cba1185463

I tried the DJI softer foam, for me I liked the standard harder foam but with shims fitted on the side of the goggles.
Also using single band thick head strap(ethix)

Ah cool thanks Martin :)

I think I'm going to go V2, for the simple feature of linking it to a phone, essentially like they do with the rest if their range. I think that's as good as its going to get for the foreseeable future.

Although it now appears DJI have pulled the V2 pre orders and do gave all the retailers too.

Well from what I've been hearing, DJI pulled the sales because of all the disappointing reviews just before the launch.

Then they sent surveys out to all the reviewer acknowledging people were not happy and then asked what features the reviewers want in the V2's

So looks like hdmi output might be getting integrated after all. Glad they decided yo do this. I can't see OLED being added without a price hike though.

Another interesting development was the first batches of V2's that arrived in the states were rejected by customs as well.
