Help required. Standalone FPV camera
« on: April 21, 2021, 10:39:15 AM »

Hi all. New here and needing some advice. Not sure if this the right section to ask in?

I'm new to quads, and bought a cheap copter recently.
It flies great, but its onboard camera has a reception range of about 30 feet (wifi connection) and even at close range its laggy. Meaning it's all but useless for fpv.

As it's not a kit drone, I dont want to be chopping it up and messing with the internals, if I can help. The original cam is also good for recording video, onboard. So I want to keep it.

So, what I am wondering is, is there a standalone, small, light, camera, with it's own power supply, and decent range (only needs to be 250m, as that is the drone max), that can connect to an FPV headset. Something that can be literally strapped to the copter body, connected independently to a headset, and away we go? Cheap would be a bonus too. I'm not looking for 4k cinematic, or anything. Just a basic flying experience, and I don't want too many salty tears, if it "lands" in a lake!  ;)

I've done a lot of searching, but I'm a bit overwhelmed by all the various kits and bits out there.

Thanks for info you folks can offer.

It's not so much just a camera that's the main issue, it's the camera, the video transmitter, video receiver and ground equipment to view the image.

You will probably not find a camera + video transmitter which will have a signal that is able to be picked up by whatever it is you're using on the ground - or maybe you will, but if you could tell us what you have that would be a bonus - so you will need to buy a full FPV system:

Camera (onboard)
V-transmitter (onboard)
----
V-Receiver (on the ground)
Screen / Goggles (on the ground).

Video transmitter and camera:

Video receiver and screen:

if you do already have a video receiver and screen (or goggles!) then you're probably good to go with the VTX and Camera above which is only about £20 as it supports Hubsan and Immersion bands + frequencies. Double check what you have though.

Hi. Thanks for your reply and the links.

I have an Eachine E511S.

I have no FPV kit at all at present, so it's a blank slate on that front.

Im really surprised nobody has done a pre-built unit, camera/battery/transmitter, all-in-one. It would seem like a winner across the whole RC spectrum for casual or tech lacking pilots.

Failing such a thing, and me not being able to adapt my drone. Could you or anyone else recommend a decent budget FPV kit/pre-built quad?

Well the thing is FPV has always really been a DIY hobby so unfortunately research is going to be required. Unless you're willing to spend the big bucks and go DJI you're essentially going to be piecing together components:

you need:
a quad or plane
a video transmitter
a video camera
a video receiver
a screen or goggles

There are beginner packs available (when they're in stock) such as https://www.quadcopters.co.uk/fpv-micro-drones/betafpv-whoops/betafpv-whoop-racing-advanced-kit-2
but by and large it's a research game I'm afraid. Those type of things tend to be great for a few weeks, then the bug bites and you end up purchasing faster and more high-quality stuff.

The good news is everyone was a beginner once - there are countless Youtube videos and forum articles available nowadays which weren't available when FPV first started, so you have a big advantage - you are also not the first to ask these questions, so the answers are out there.

Do some searching, ask people what gear they have and take it from there. You will probably also need a soldering iron at some point :) Just remember it's supposed to be overwhelming when you first start - you'll learn quickly and it won't seem so bad.

Thanks for your help. I'll do some digging and see where it gets me. It will be fun to build one, rather than buy a set, I reckon.

It definitely is fun - and the beauty of it is if you DIY you can replace things for improved gear as your skills / needs change rather than having to rebuy everything.

"Back in the day" we used to make FPV back packs which basically allowed you to attach a camera and video transmitter onto any plane so you didn't need to have FPV cameras and transmitters for every plane. You still need the ground gear though, but it meant you could fly as many aircraft as you like from one FPV camera + transmitter.

Obviously if you go down the route of more complicated stuff like flight controllers and on-screen displays (OSDs) the video gear tends to be wired into the plane permanently, but for basic video all you need is

a) a camera
b) a video transmitter (vtx)
c) a battery (or balance lead adapter for your flight battery)

Chuck it on a little mount, secure it to the plane and you're away. That eachine VTX+camera combo is perfect for this application - but you do need to decide what to use on the ground.

Here's a great example of one if you've got a spare 20 mins:
