Title: FY31AP and HORNET OSD
Post by: Drone 5 on February 28, 2013, 05:24:43 PM
Hi Guys
I have just received the FY31AP and Hornet OSD and set it up for bench test.
The only display I am getting in my goggles overlayed on the video picture is "Pal" On start up It says Hornet OSD V 1.6 and that I have no SD Card or words to that effect.

My question is :-  To get some or all of the OS display in my goggles do you need to have a SD card installed or should it work without one? At present I am testing the set up only using my Futaba 6EX so I know all functions will not work. Just wanted to test Camera, vtx and display.
Thanks
M.

I had the same problem, its something to do with the gps not being connected to the osd properly. Have you got it connected through the fy31ap ?

Hi Jaymun.
Thanks fot the reply. GPS module is connected to FY31AP and the 2 wire (black and white) plug and socket then goes from the FY31AP to the Hornet. Will take a look at it and report back. There seems little info regarding this wire connecion. May have wires reversed.
Thanks

Yeah I felt the same way setting mine up,  I think the cables may be setup wrong out of the box. To get mine to work I moved the one pin out on the connector so that both the ground and the signal were on the outer two pins. Ill try and get a picture sorted for you in a bit so you can see what I'm talking about.

If you check out alishanmao videos on youtube he describes how he had to change the pin on the connector as well, I think this is the video here

My tablets not complying with youtube for some reason but im pretty sure thats the video.

Hi Jaymun.
All sorted. First of all I disconnected GPS lead that was connecting Hornet to FY31AP. Then connected GPS module to Hornet. Hornet as stand alone unit, and all worked. I then reconnected GPS module to FY31AP and then the black and white cable back between FY31AP and Hornet  BUT THE OTHER WAY ROUND. Plug ends that is, ground (black) still to ground. Switched on and all worked.

So yes, as you stated, it was to do with the GPS.

I followed the instructions as per alishanmao video. He has got the cable the wrong way round.

Not knocking him as I think his videos are great, without his videos I would have been struggling with this set up. Gives you a lot more backup.

Again thanks for your help and I love this forum. Good to be able to help each other out.

Remember, DIP 4 "ON" ( up ) trim it in flight, flick stabilization on for >3 seconds, then off, land DIP 4 off. Very important that bit or it will go Pete Tong real quick ;)

Thanks Coyote for that. Yep, have read that and put on my pre flight list for first flight.
Waiting for Turnigy 9 and frsky module and bits to arrive, then do mods.
Then try to stuff all that stuff into my Bixler 2 and set it up.

Had one quick flight, simple FPV the other week, got lost in no time. Got away with it thanks to my spotter. Brown pants job.  Ha ha.
No more, hence the FY31AP and Hornet.

Will post maiden when done, hopefully in a few weeks.

Hi Guys again.
Just starting to install FY31AP and Hornet OSD into my Bixler.
I am looking at putting the GPS module towards the rear of the fuz but the lead is quite short. In the box of wires there is a cable which has a plug on one side and a socket on the other. There are 4 wires, black, red, yellow and green.
The GPS module has only 3 wires, black, red,  (3rd missing) and green.

My question is :- can I use this wire as an extension lead? I see no reason why not as it fits, but would like to hear what others have done.
If not where can I get one?

I think that the cable is for plugging into the USB lead that came with the FY31AP.

Thanks

Drone 5, I used a servo extension cable, the pins inside a servo plug are the same as the pins in that 4 pin plug from FYtech.

1. make a note of the coloured wires and their correct order in the FY plug
2. using a tiny screwdriver or a pin/paperclip, carefully push down in the small holes and pull out the wires with the pins crimped
3. do the same with the plug end of your servo extension cable and insert the servo wire pins into the 4 way plug (you may have to use the white/light wire as a substitute for the green wire)
4. at the other end of the servo extension, remember to put the ferrite ring on with at least 4 coils before step 5
5. desolder the wires from the GPS, tin the ends of the servo wires and solder them onto the FY-GPS (which you would have opened up by now) in this order:

I took this pic before I desoldered so I would have them in the right order.

6. pop the black metal cover back on the GPS being careful to route your servo wires through the small gap in the metal

bish bash bosh, you have a longer GPS wire :)

I had my GPS all the way at the back of the tail boom, just fore of the vert stab. I think you've seen my Bixler 2 haven't you

Hi Guys, me again with another question. I think I must be THICK. (Don't answer that)
On the OSD of the Hornet the current latitude and longitude is displayed. Format : "dddmm.mmm" acording to manual.
I am given to understand that this is decimal, or part of it is.  These numbers are different to Degrees, minutes and seconds found on Google maps.

Can anyone tell me in plane English what is what?

One of the reasons for the OSD is so if I record the data and loose the plane at least I my have some idea where it went down. Seen this statement a lot on the forums.

An example would be helpful.

Thanks
M.

dddmm.mmm shows actual degrees, minutes and then the seconds would be shown as a fraction of minutes.

e.g.

05103.500  would be 51deg, 3min, 30 seconds

05256.750  would be 52deg, 56min, 45 seconds

Hope this helps.
