Just upgraded my quad to a hex and am finding the altitude lock in is not so good and it gains /looses as much as 2m. I am using new esc with the simon k flash, now my mate upgraded his quad at the same time but using standard escs were on the same gains, but his is locked in on the altitude.
Should I try reducing the vertical gain from 170?

Out of interest what TX are you using? I use a JR9XII with with Naza Roll and Pitch on the side sliders live at all times, I flew in those windy gusty conditions we had the other month; to do so I just dialed in live until it stopped hunting up and down.
Every machine is different, if you have the facility on your TX just fly and live trim the altitude until it locks.
PS I flashed my 30A Optos ESC with SimonK and they are awesome, I fly a Quad.
Changing a quad to a Hex basically means your original gains now mean nothing at all. You now have different weight, different thrust and different interactions to control the craft. So you will need to re-tune to suit. My vertical gain on my Hex is 160)% for rock solid hold, but I found if I dropped it by 20% it hunts a tiny bit, but it no longer wobbles going down through its prop wash as it did.
I changed out my Turnigy Plush ESCs for some Simon K flashed 22A ESCs from Unmanned Tech Shop and did not like the result as an arm would occasionally dip and recover and the Naza on GPS mode did not appeared to be as locked in in Yaw or height. Played with the gains and no improvement but did not move them dramatically. I read on other forums that some motors don't like the high speed ESCs, don't understand so I swapped the ESCs back and the quad is rock solid again - strange. My motors are Turnigy D2836/11 750kV running on 4S turning APC 10x3.8 slowfly props.
Could this be your issue? Can anybody explain this?
Did you remember to re-do the Naza dance..as you have changed your setup?
Other things I would re-check is that the GPS plug/and others are all fully in and make sure the ESC bullets are tight.

Got the esc's from proflight uk and they are turngy plusher 30amps with some rebranding.
Interestingly I'm also using ntm 2826 but 1200kvs
I've done the dance to re calibrate the compass and I'm on the V3 beta firm ware, it does take longer to get a lock than previously but is supposed to be more locked in.
An interesting feature for the hex is that if you have a motor or esc fail it shuts down the opposite motor to allow you to keep control.
Thanks for the pointers I'll give it a fly with the vertical gain at 160 and see how it goes.

My experience with Gyro systems normally suggests the faster the Mechanical response the lower the electronic response becomes (i.e.gain) Another example is High RPM motors assuming the correct prop is being used.
Now the difference in response in the vertical plane is also related to how quickly it you can move the mass..! power to weight so big battery is slower
In reality try 160% if its crap try 100%
