Title: Question for Phantom owners…
Post by: plingboot on May 10, 2013, 11:55:44 AM
Just wondering if anyone who owns a phantom could comment on this and/or correct me if i'm wrong?

I have an F330 build with naza and gps module which is probably my favourite MR to fly at the moment, I can however see the benefit of the Phantom - for protection of components and ability to swing a BL gimbal/gopro in a less clumsy way than i have to do with the F330. I don't however want to fork out on a full phantom kit, because the F330 will go to waste and i don't want/need to use the phantom's radio.

I've had a look around and for a reasonable price i've sourced the following phantom spares:

4 x esc's (2 red, 2 green)
1 x body shell kit
1 x mounting kit (??)
1 x landing gear
1 x screw kit
1 x mc board and LED
1 x phantom lipo

It 'looks' like a reasonably straightforward task to solder up the components, transfer in my preferred t-motors (same size as phantoms)/graupner props, add my naza, cobble a GPS mount, use my preferred ppm receiver, and add an rctimer bl gimbal, VTx, FPV cam etc. etc...

I'm assuming i don't need the phantom compass, as the regular naza gps module has it's own compass inside?

Is there anything obvious i've missed or need to be aware of?

Looks ok..  you will probably have to mount the NAZA GPS outside the shell on top..  (Phantom MAG is mounted on led)

You will also need to configure the Naza for GPS/MAG location .. as you wont be able to use the Phantom parameters config file.

If you are fitting a gimbal.  extended landing gear might be better.. some mods available for those now.. ie: four carbon legs

Would also consider a USB extension cable to extend that down on of the legs etc

thanks.

Am planning to have the gps mast extending out of the top of the shell.

Saw some leg mounts on shapeways (http://www.shapeways.com/model/1019077/dji-phantom-landing-gear-v2.html?li=moreFromShop&material=62) - very nice, but not £40 nice.  :(

Was thinking of buying a second set of phantom legs and butchering them up for the mount part...

Why not stick with the F330 and get your self the Talon skids and then you can heat up the joints to soften the glue after which you cut down the C/F tubes and make a nice tidy smaller set of skids so you can hang a cam off the bottom :)

Surely the F330 is far more durable and crash resistant when compared to the Phantom?
