I'm just finishing off the gear mounting on my Discovery type quad and I'm not sure if I should have my 5.8Ghz Spironet Aerial up in the fresh air or down below. The vtx will be on the top plate so if up it is in clean air with no components particularly nearby but if it is down, the elements themselves are just below the bottom plate but much closer to motor/ESC cables and the Ez OSD current sensor.
I have mine hanging down normally, just because the multi is always higher than my Vrx antenna so the least carbon / other blocking material is not in the way
+1 what Coyote said as the air frame is always higher then the rx.
That's how I have mine and zero issues.
+2 always hanging down that way you should never have anything in the line of sight meaning more range ;-) motors, escs, pcb boards etc all cause either some form of interference or block you vid signal a bit so keeping them well out the way will give you your best chance
Thanks guys, that was what logic told me too but I see so many photos of aerials up in the air I was wondering if I had missed something...
No they have ;-)
Just to throw into the mix I have my RX aerial on my ht-fpv frame mounted at the back with the aerial pointing up but tall enough to clear the frame no matter what ever the angle of the quad is. If it was on bottom it would be block when I fly it towards me and it would be crushed when I land.
Your rx antenna is not quite as important tbh as you have two and it will choose the best one to use. It also seems alot less prone to interference
