"Sunday, a really bad day for my good friend", he's on 2.4gig no fail safe RX; has had quite a few brown outs but this time around he was in Atti mode now that he is confident to fly out of GPS mode.
He got to 1000ft down range when his quad went out of range or he had a brown out ? The last such episode I grabbed the TX and run after his plane and managed to get it back but this time he didn't hand me the TX; he assumed he'd walk a few pace's and regain control but no luck the quad just slowly few away. He never asked for my help? Here is his poster should anyone hear of a quad being found.

On the poster it looks like there's a gps?
Didn't that kick in when he had the brownout?
The failsafe will only kick in if the rx has full failsafe.
I can't read that poster - the resolution is the same when i click on it, got a higher res version?
Meant to say that scenario is the stuff of nightmares! Hope he gets it back. I wonder what the potential range would be before his battery was on empty?

Try it now, also I replied to your bearings Q with a link have you had a look ?
He was on 35MHz PCM before, with full return to home capability; he said he felt safer on 2.4!!. we've had a look on goggle map and based on some of his full size piloting skills he has come up with some numbers that estimate around 2 miles at the most. He's resigned to never finding it now.

Yup, poster at higher res now. Seen response thanks - will save me a couple of quid. :)
You mean this has happened multiple times yet he still continued to fly with a copter that was prone to flying away for him due to what I assume are easily fixable brownouts?

Well he upgraded his set up with a 1Watt booster but something caused it to go out of range at 1000ft. I'd never have trusted it after 2 brown outs'. Sometimes you have to step back if once's opinion is not heeded; it's an expensive experiment eh!
Two days privious I tested a 1/4 wave antenna at the same site and got to 2200ft on 35MHz on my quad and at the same time I know that my quad will come home if RC is lost.

Todays lesson: Invest in decent radio gear because its cheaper than a new Quad. (?)

Yes indeed.... If he's like me he would have to learn the lesson for himself and no amount of telling would have helped.
I learned my lesson the hard way and so now I have cultivated a "better to be safe than sorry" attitude and I test and check my airframes before trying anything risky. Now I'm very anal and I spent lots of time making sure my electronics are in good working order.
It actually works out better, I now have 3 flyable working airframes that I know I can rely on, took me a while but now I spend more time enjoying flying and less time messing around at the field trying to bodge things.
